Mallorca 2012 (2 Viewers)

Scops can be found all year long in the Balearics. The local population is supposed to be mostly resident. Besides, many continental Scops migrate through the islands at least as late as October, with possibly some of them wintering in the archipelago.

At last something to report. Salobrar de Campos: over 300 Avocets, 200 Kentish plovers, 2 Dunlin (summer plumage) Ruff, Spotted redshank, Little stint, Osprey, Water rail, Fan-tailed warbler. Cetti's warbler and a distant Godwit. Hundreds of House martins and Barn swallows. That's a good start, will be going a couple more times in the coming week but things are hotting up.

good news mike,
no sign of any rain?.
a few shots of fan tailed warbler and sardinian warbler.

No, no rain yet, it is mighty hot and humid so we could do with a storm, would stir things up and may produce some good birds. Let's hope.

Squashed Scops Owl (juvenile) yesterday on the Cabo Blanco road, and a bit further up near the lighthouse a male Common Redstart on its way south.

Hi Mike
I spent the first 2 weeks of August around S'Albufera area. Very dry around all the hides. I had a temmnicks stint along Ses Puntes track, 9 marbled duck at the water works and a quail calling near the waterworks also. Plus all the usual stuff. The ES Colombars hide was closed for maintenace for most of the two weeks which was a pity as it was the only hide that had any decent size pool in front of it.

regards
Sean

nice one with the temmincks and quail sean, will be there in 17 days time for 2 weeks cannot wait and fingers crossed for some rain.
a few shots of cirl buntings xbill and turtle dove.

So long as any major rain is before the 3rd of September, when I arrive, I'll be happy.

I've had two visits to Mallorca in the last 12 months pretty much spoiled by adverse weather conditions, so as this one is proving to be the most expensive trip to date I'd prefer warm humid conditions (so just a little rain) without too much wind (especially at night!!).

We''ll just have to see what happens.

Whatever occurs, it should be an enjoyable break.

Martin

Will be coming out in a couple of days time on a family holiday, but hope to get a few hours of for good behaviour to get some quality birding in. I know it's a bit to early in the aumtum for the best birds on passage but could any one tell me if the Lesser Kestrels and Short-toed Eagles that have been seen in the central plains are still about? I have seen in previous posts that some were seen in the spring and I would love to try and catch up with these cracking birds of prey.

Thanks Chris

Hi Chris, yes they are stunning birds to see. This year has been pretty poor for raptor migration. I know that about five Lesser kestrels were seen around Salobrar de Campos in spring but they did not stay as far as I know. They possibly bred there a couple of years ago but this was not confrmed. Hardly any Short-toed eagles this year either, I saw one at Albercutx in spring but none since. It could be a reasonable time for migration although a bit early. With this Island you never know, it often surprises us. Good luck, let me know if you want ay other information and do please post your sightings. Thaks, Mike.

thanks kathy,
these are the last ones from the june/july holiday, just waiting for 7 sept.
xbills.

No migration at the Cap de ses Salines at dawn this morning but 8 Cory's shearwaters and a Nightjar caught in the headlights on the way down. Salobrar: some Flamingos are back, 95 in all. Also 30 Common swift, 2 Woodchats, 5 Dunlin, 120 Kentish plovers, 3 Booted eagle, one Osprey, 7 Ruff, one Black-tailed godwit, 2 Wood sandpipers, 8 Curlew, 2 Stone curlew, 3 Curlew sandpipers, Water rail, 6 Cattle egret, Red kite, 90 Black-winged stilts, 3 Ringed plover. It was way too hot for birding.
