    eurasian Curlew digging with crab

Not a very appettising looking meal.

Even with such a long bill he has to put his head into it.

    Eurasian Curlew in flight

As the birds moved inside at the rising tide the last of the curlews headed straight for the hide. I was happy to get focus lock on this one and a series of 6 frames before they were all gone. Neil.
  5. Same old story ...

    Same old story ...

tripod; -1.33 EV; 1/800s; f/8; ISO 200 I know, not much difference from some previous shots ... yet I find quite challenging getting a picture of this bird I find satisfying: exposure is always tricky, lighting may play havoc with my final result ... Luckily my hide is often a suitable place...

    Eurasian Curlew in flight

Late in the day about 100 curlews flew down into the pond where I was sitting watching greenshanks and spoonbills. The D3 exploded into action. Neil.
  9. Ripe

    Ripe

tripod; -0.33 EV; 1/500s; f/5.6; ISO 200 The season is ripe with new fruits, and my new hide is ready to gather them ... if only the weather was more obliging, sigh ... ;)
  10. Eurasian Curlew

    Eurasian Curlew

Although the light was not great the tide was just enough to bring the many of the birds near the hide. Neil.
  11. Welcome back!

    Welcome back!

tripod; -0.67 EV; 1/1000s; f/5.6; ISO 200 After a year or so, I'm very glad now: why? My brand new hide is completed!!!! This shot was taken during the first session spent in the hide - still many details wait to be modified (for example, I don't know yet whether the bench is above high tide...
  12. Eurasian Curlew

    Eurasian Curlew

One of at least five birds oversummering at this site. I did the sketch in the field and then tidied it up and added watercolours after I got home

  15. Tide waters

    Tide waters

handheld; -0.67 EV; 1/1000s; f/5.6; ISO 200 I found a new spot along my channel which revealed itself as quite productive - the downside is that if I don't pay attention to the flood tide I'll have to spend the rest of the day as an outcast on a muddy 3 square metre islet ;)
  16. Eurasian Curlews

    Eurasian Curlews

At one stage we have over 30 curlews about 25 metres in front of the hide . In trying to find one to isolate in the frame I found this little group all lined up. Neil.
  17. Against the wind

    Against the wind

tripod; -0.67 EV; 1/800s; f/5.6; ISO 200 This time the strong windblasts played in my favour, frozing the bird in midair while trying to reach the mudflats along the banks of the channel

    Pain in the .. mouth!

ground; -0.67 EV; 1/1000s; f/8; ISO 400 The strip of seashore along the channel exposed at low tide was surprisingly very productive ... the downside was laying low almost on mud waiting for a curlew to come close enough ... mosquitos were already VERY close! Here the crab was fiercely fighting...
  20. Low tide, low patience

    Low tide, low patience

handheld; -0.67 EV; 1/60s; f/5.6; ISO 400 It was already late: I had been waiting the low tide for the curlews to appear on the mudflat and ... nothing! So, I was packing my gear, when I noticed them peacefully feeding hidden among the weeds along the shoreline

    Aggressive Eurasian curlew

This guy was ensuring he had the lion's share of the beach by chasing off all the whimbrels.
