    What a scruff

I think I've told you before that Magpies are pretty rare in this area, but they are becoming a little more visible. The last two to three years I've had occasional visits from one or two and have heard them from our car park. This is one that called in last August. They usually hang around (or...
  3. My Garden rarity

    My Garden rarity

A bit of excitement in the middle of August, when a Magpie came to the garden. Unfortunately, he only sat at the top of the tree, behind the leaves and spent all his time preening. However, we can see enough to identify him. I just seem to get 1 or 2 visits a year, from the locally scarce species.

This one is everywhere here. Was easier to ID. Unless I got it all wrong lol
  5. Christmas present

    Christmas present

Christmas eve found us back at the Mause feeders. Couldn't believe my eyes when this Eurasian Magpie called in for his dinner! It had been nearly a year since we'd caught sight of one there (back in February!). What a lovely Christmas present eh! They're still such a rarity here.

I don't get nearly so many now, and it's good to see them when they do turn up. Through window glass. Thanks for your comments and good birding. John

Video: Magpie Bird Preens a Muntjac Deer at RSPB Rye Meads, Hertforshire, UK 05th June 2023

Eurasian magpie preens a male Muntjac deer at RSPB Rye Meads, Hertfordshire, UK, 05th June 2023 (Preening starts @00:28). Magpies and deer sometimes display a symbiotic relationship where the deer will tolerate the magpie on its back in return for the magpie removing ectoparasites such as fleas...

Strange Magpie sound, 7 Mar, Central Poland

I believe these sounds were repeated over and over by at least one Magpie perched on a treetop. I'd never heard it before and wonder what they could be or what function they could serve. A subsong would be my best bet, but isn't it too loud for a subsong, and shouldn't a subsong be more varied...

    Christmas treats 3

I used to be a bit frustrated that the magpies would manage to untie the Xmas treats and fly away with them. This year they didn't do that. Also this year I hung up enough "cookies" that a magpie or two could be enjoying cookies and there would still be others available for the smaller birds.

    Escaped

Back in August, a cousin and her husband visited Scotland and we arranged to meet up at Loch Leven RSPB reserve, as it was about half-way between us. It was good to catch up with them after many years. This reserve used to be called Vane Farm. We had lunch there then a wander round the reserve...

    European Magpie harasses an Osprey

This year I was very lucky to be able observe two Ospreys near my area. This is a juvenile Osprey which is being harassed by a European Magpie (Pica pica)

This bird has been nibbling lichen. Carrion Crows do the same. It seems hardly worth the effort, but they must be finding something with food value. Thank you for your comments, stay safe and well.
