loch of the lowes

  1. Canada Goose family

    Canada Goose family

They were even further away than the grebe nest! And not only that, they were in the shade under the overhanging trees. I hardly ever see Canada geese round here, though they do seem to have been a bit more common this last year. Told you it was family day. Actually this reminds me of a day...
  2. Mallard family

    Mallard family

Family day today. Just a point of interest, maybe, for some.... I found focusing quite difficult on the ruffled water, suppose I should have used one of the other options but somehow never seem to think about it in the heat of the moment. It did improve the closer they got, so this is one of...
  3. Grebe nest

    Grebe nest

We moved on into the hide to see what was on the loch. From memory I'm pretty sure this was a Great Crested Grebe nest. It was quite a small object at distance, so a quite big crop. Strange, it seems so exposed and is virtually underneath an Osprey nest!
  4. You wanted cute?

    You wanted cute?

Does this fit the bill then LOL Spotted this brood all huddled together under the trees, obviously exhausted after the day's exercise. They were a bit distant, so a heavy crop, sorry.
  5. Male Yellowhammer

    Male Yellowhammer

Aren't his colours stunning! It was a shame that I couldn't get a picture of the male away from the feeders... but you take what you're given!! Well at least I do! TTTW
  6. Saturday fun......

    Saturday fun......

..... or "You can't see me" I had quite a choice of pictures for this woodpecker.... all much the same. They don't make it easy for you sometimes, do they. So I've no idea whether this was a male or female! TTTW
  7. Pheasant chick

    Pheasant chick

I don't think these can be given quite have the same 'wee cutie' label, as the grouse one, but he still is rather cute don't you think. They're not long learning where spilled food is likely to be, are they. This guy was actually following a male Mallard, LOL. In the feeder area, so TTTW.
  8. Yellowhammer

    Yellowhammer

I think this may be a female, as there was another bird, obviously male. Thoughts? Anyway.... after our rather grousy lunch stop, we headed down to Aberfeldy, then up over the hills again to Loch Tummel (anyone know the Road to the Isles song? http://ingeb.org/songs/throadto.html We took the...
  9. Saturday fun....

    Saturday fun....

.... or Goldeneye diving action They always do it to me!!! However, I thought the images made a good sequence showing the diving action. From the centre, work clockwise from the top right. The last one is either the same bird coming up, or his mate surfacing where I thought he was going to...
  10. Saturday fun.....

    Saturday fun.....

....or I don't know who got the biggest shock!! I saw the perched Great Tit arrive at the feeder and started to take his picture, when suddenly one that was inside burst out!!! It was only going through the couple of earlier images, that I could see a bit of white behind the perspex. I love...
  11. Another splash of yellow

    Another splash of yellow

I couldn't leave this folder without showing you another picture of the gorgeous Yellowhammer - I get so few chances of photographing them these days. Not sure if I'll have time to post tomorrow as I'm off on my hols. We're supposed to have internet access there, so hopefully I'll be able to...
  12. Mallards

    Mallards

Rather a distant view of these two, but I did like the colours both on his head and in the water too. Wasn't sure how to present this, tried a couple of different crops - and hope you think this one has worked.
  13. Goldeneye Male

    Goldeneye Male

Hot on the heels of the female came this male, but he wasn't nearly so kind to me as she was. This was the only picture of got of him completely on the surface - the other ones are more suited to SF!!
  14. Goldeneye female

    Goldeneye female

I took myself off to the single-decker hide to see what was on the loch. There wasn't a lot very close, but this lady swam past giving me good opportunities to photograph her - and I got the best pics of a female ever!!! Doesn't she have a lovely eye and bill colouring?
  15. Yellowhammer

    Yellowhammer

Back in 2013 I promised I would get a better picture of a 'hammer... it's taken a while, hasn't it!! I had a job to decide which of many pictures I took of this beauty to show you though, so there may be another before too long. This was taken around the feeding station area at Loch of the...
  16. Two of my favourites

    Two of my favourites

The Loch of the Lowes visitor centre has a large viewing window overlooking a feeding station. This was one of the first pictures I got when I sat down... not bad eh? You just have to love them both, don't you. TTTW
  17. Weekend View

    Weekend View

A late February visit to Loch of the Lowes and at last the skies had cleared making for a lovely day. There are two hides, one double-decker and the one i was in which is ground floor. The views from the hides a just lovely.
  18. Weekend Wildlife

    Weekend Wildlife

That Red Squirrel I showed you a week or two back made about 3 more visits to the feeders. He was an absolute joy to watch. I just had to show you another picture of him.
  19. Easter Squirrel

    Easter Squirrel

.... sorry, don't have a bunny picture. This gorgeous Red Squirrel was hiding in the nut feeder at Loch of the Lowes - couldn't believe how sweet this image was when i downloaded it. I do have some nice 'proper' pictures of this guy, which I'll likely share with you another day. TTTW
  20. Mallard

    Mallard

The last of the birds from that day at Loch of the Lowes. This Mallard came in to clean up the spills on the ground. The light was really beginning to go by this time. TTTW
  21. Treecreeper

    Treecreeper

For those that know me, you'll understand how pleased I was to get this picture!! Seen loads of them over the years, but the previous cameras I had were useless at getting images of these guys... my favourite woodland bird. I finally got a picture about this time last year, but it wasn't worthy...
  22. Great Spotted Woodpecker

    Great Spotted Woodpecker

A Great Spotted Woodpecker paid two brief visits. I couldn't get a picture the first time and on returning he was only a little bit more co-operative. Of several images, this was the only one with the head and eye in clear view!! He was much kinder to me than one I saw yesterday though!!! TTTW
  23. White-headed Chaffinch

    White-headed Chaffinch

... they have leucistic Chaffinches at Loch of the Lowes too it seems. Just managed to get this one in view - it was the only picture where both of them were sharpish. TTTW It's a lovely day here, so I'm off out. I'll catch up with browsing later on.
  24. Weekend View

    Weekend View

In order to give the binoculars I was interested in a bit of a test, thought I'd better go to one of the hides. Sadly there weren't too many birds in view that day, from memory I think the one we can see in this picture was a Goldeneye. The only other bird I can remember seeing on the water was...
  25. Great Tit

    Great Tit

A handsome male Great Tit was waiting his turn at the Loch of the Lowes feeders. There was such a nice variety of birds there that day. TTTW
