Best seeds for fall migration and winter in Northeast US? (1 Viewer)

Start by deciding which species you want to attract to the feeders and what seed they prefer. Cardinals are an east coast bird and I woud expect they would be happy to find black oil sunflower seeds. Suet may be good but I have not had any birds interested in it out in coastal California.

Rather pricey but Sunflower hearts are quite popular amongst the birds. Then you have Sunflower seeds, and Safflower seeds which Cardinals love. I cannot keep enough suet feeders as they eat the heck out of them especially in the cooler weather.

Nyger Seed for Finches and in particular Pine Siskins. Black Oil Sunflower for Evening Grosbeaks if you're lucky. Mealworms live or dry are always a hit. Peanut Butter based mixes also can attract late Warblers. Peanut butter smeared on a tree sustained a Yellow-throated Warbler all winter at a nearby lake a few years ago.

Here's some Peanut Butter mix I made yesterday. I made a double batch with cranberries and raisins. I don't have suet so I just used double Lard.
