Birds in Cumbria (3 Viewers)

I actually registered with the Yahoo cumbrian birders group, but received so many downloads, that I promptly cancelled, sorry to the mod who did accept my application,it just seemed to be somewhat complicated.
Yes,re the Kendal contingent,I have met the aforesaid in our local hide, they seemed more interested in their sarnies, and flasks and only wanted to see a rareity(misspelt!!!).I fiercely defend our local reserve,we have little or no input from the RSPB,they are only interested in Leighton Moss,as it is a money spinner, but we have twice the no of visiting species,as they have, but no protection is provided for the Terns etc.
Yes,South Copeland misses out all round.
Thanks all,I feel so much better now .

What a real shame, i didnt think id seen any of your reports lately... Wounder why you get spam...Ive never had any off the group? strange... and its typical of the rspb to spend there time on there money making reserves...doesn't say much for there management when there seriously neglecting other sites...be really good if you managed to get back on the Cumbria yahoo group, (although understand if you dont)

Yahoo groups etc

There are, of course, many more ways of spreading bird news other than through internet groups - Birdline North West, Rare Bird Alert and other bird information services have been in existence since long before either this BF thread or the Birding Cumbria yahoo group. Failure to post on local newsgroups doesn't necessarily equate to either suppression or a lack of willingness to share information. Some people steer clear of posting on such sites to avoid the kind of ill-informed personal abuse displayed in some recent posts on here, particularly that from Pratincol.

couldn't disagree more.
Hardly personal abuse and certainly not ill informed.Actually an accurate description.
Notice how you are the lone voice on this one.
So far two respondents have actually concurred with my observation.
Are you a member of this so called fraternity masquerading as the Kendal Mafia?

Hi Ian,

The kind of measured, intelligent response I would expect from you. Whilst you are quite right that there are other ways to put news out you could come on this thread now and then to share your expertise, not just when your ears are burning. It might help encourage one or two youngsters or others new to birding.

All the best,

Stephen.

Hi Stephen

You may well be right but perhaps it's because I'm one of those "selfish old men who are so up themselves" and "keep everything to themselves", comments I found rather sad and disappointing, coming as they did, from someone with whom I can only ever recall having amicable conversations in the past and who, if I remember correctly, has the so-called Kendal Mafia, of which he speaks so disparagingly, to thank for first telling him about the Sizergh Castle Hawfinches some years ago. Is that not the case Mark (Pratincol)?

Perhaps we could all just go back to enjoying birding in our own way and refrain from trading insults.

Regards
Ian

I'm now a member of confused.dot.com.
Can't remember having amicable conversations with anyone called Ian.
Are you a member of the Kendal Mafia?

I'm out!

Thacka Flash, Penrith

Nothing of note on the flash itself, but a few hundred yards north is a couple of acres of flooded fields that is currently holding many hundreds of birds. I was viewing from some distance (layby along the A6) and didn't have my scope, so couldn't say with any accuracy what was present, but did see c200 lapwing, lots of gulls, redwings, fieldfares, big flock of starlings, and two buzzards worming. Might be an area to keep an eye on while it remains flooded.

Drove home via most of the major Rowan tree areas, but no sign of any waxwings.

Waxwings, Penrith

Up to 80 in the tree tops at the end of Frenchfield Gardens, (opposite the Cross Keys on the A686). Quite mobile, but seem to be coming back there quite regularly.

Stephen and Ian ,call a truce. We need to keep Cumbria on the map.Our little County is very special.Albiet ,Stephen you are perhaps a little South of the border!!!.

Waxwings, Penrith

Still in the Frenchfield Gardens area today. 3 or 4 flocks combining to around 130 in total.

Reports of Northern Diver(think that is correct),in one of our local lagoons.A couple of guys from Kendal were looking around the reserve for it.(aplogies to the chaps concerned if they visit this post, they scared away my little Reed Bunting when I had sat on a cold rock for 1 1/2 hrs waiting for it to appear and stay!!!),but apparently we do have a Diver in our area.

It's a juvenile Great Northern Diver Christine and it was on the main lagoon at Hodbarrow on at least Saturday and Sunday (13th-14th Nov).

Hi Christine

No not me, so no apologies necessary - we were there on Sunday when the diver was favouring the eastern end of the main lagoon quite close to the seawall at times. Hope it stays around for you.
