Hi, I recently had to send my camera In to Warehouse Express for repair after only 9 months of use. What I am wanting to know Is, Is about camera insurance & who would you recommend for insuring my 40D when It finally comes home after repair....

I have just gone through this and ended up using my house contents with additional cover. Well what I should say is new house contents policy after the existing one wanted an extra £300 to cover my optics. In reality I don't think they wanted to do it so loaded it to such a degree I would not pay it. The new one worked out cheaper than having contents and specialist insurance.

I have an additional rider attachment to our homeowners insurance, State Farm. It cost about $1.16 per $100.00 per year for a no-peril coverage.

My house contents insurance would only cover a maximum of £2000 in the car with a single item limit of a £1000 per item so ive taken out specialist insurance with Glover & Howe (01206 814500) their car limit is£6500.

On these household policy you guys are quoting, surely this would only cover theft or accidental damage wouldn't it? I mean if a camera's shutter went for instance would it cover the cost of repair?

You're right - unless you dropped the camera by mistake and the shutter went!

I'm not sure any insurance policy would cover a component failure. I've got my camera kit insured with towergate and there is no mention of that sort of cover.

Re the original question, covering the camera on house and contents will be the cheapest route, so long as you do not exceed the single item limit and will provide good enough cover unless the equipment is used for commercial gain, of any description, in which case read the small print carefully

Sounds more like an extended warranty you're interested in. They're usually available at the time of purchase of the item but I'm not sure about afterwards.

Depends where you bought it but a lot of companies will offer a extended warranty just before the 1 year manufacturers warranty runs out (they usually sent you a letter or two trying to get you to take one out). This will cost a fair bit more than including it on your household policy though.

I have my gear on the home insurance. The only thing it does not cover is if the gear is in the boot and the car gets stolen. Apparently that needs to be seperately under the car insurance. If the gear gets stolen from the boot (and the car is not stolen) then I am covered.

It may be worth checking on this specifically if you have the gear on your home insurance.

It is probably the extended warranty i am thinking about, because i think im right in saying the home insurance does not cover for repairs, isnt only for replacements like new for old, that sort of thing & because Im only 9 months into my original 12mth I should be able to get an extension on my existing warranty. Im going to phone WEX in the morning & ask them or Canon which ever It Is. But It will pay me In the long run to get something done, I mean my camera needed repairing within 9 months of having It & whats to say It wont happen again, when my warranty has run out..

I looked into camera insurance a few years back and came to the conclusion that the small print on most specialist policies is very difficult to comply with particularly when it comes to in-car storage. Having also read a few stories from people who found it very hard to get insurers to actually pay up when gear was stolen from a car I went the home content insurance route.

I am surprised that it covers mechanical breakdown/failure as well Marcus, thought you could only do that with a extended warranty.

hi, Warehouse express have finally sent my camera to canon to be fixed, although they had it for above a week first, but I have managed to get a warranty extension simply by registering my camera online with Canon. So now my cameras warranty ends in 2010 & NOT in 3 months. Not bad indeed. The only downside Is I will have to wait a 4-5 weeks for my camera..

Nikon camera warrenties, of course, are for TWO years - as long as you register the camera with them online.
