Can anyone help with this fungus? If indeed it is a fungus! Found on very rotten oak tree. It measures about 6 cms in length and feels like wet putty to touch.

I have just looked in my fungi book and it looks like:

Reticularia lycoperdon / Enteridium lycoperdon.
Occurence-- throughout year but more prevalent in spring; frequent.
Inedible
Fruiting body 0.5 - 8cm diam.
 
Totally agree (the current name is Reticularia lycoperdon).

Of course, it's not a fungus - It's a slime-mould. It usually likes to exit the wood via insect holes.
