Caught a Hornet on the stairs (1 Viewer)

Just caught this Hornet on the stairs & then released it outside.
Assume it European Hornet & nothing exotic.
Is January the usual month for a hornet to be active ?
We're in Swindon, Wilts, UK.

Yes, Vespa crabro.

It will be an over-wintering queen. She should be dormant but it was very mild yesterday & perhaps had been disturbed?

Examining my moths this am, all outside the trap around the pot to include this unexpected “dozey” individual.😮 + a “white” ladybird?
