Great news for all of us: Bill Oddie has been awarded an OBE. The announcement will be made in tomorrow's UK newspapers.

May I may be the first to offer The Great Man my congratulations. For those of you who don't know much about Our Bill, he is Britain's most famous birder. Here is a background piece:

Peter

GOODIE WITH A PASSION FOR WILDLIFE

Bill Oddie was one of the three offbeat brains behind madcap 1970s comedy The Goodies - but he is rewarded for his services to conservation.

The 61-year-old has become one of Britain's best loved wildlife
broadcasters, stemming from his hobby of birdwatching.

Just last month Oddie fronted an ambitious week-long broadcast called Wild In Your Garden for the BBC.

The bearded funnyman was born in Sparth Bottoms Road, Rochdale, and was brought up largely by his father after his mother left. They moved later to the West Midlands.

As a child he would collect birds' eggs but corrected the error of
his ways to develop a huge love of birds, writing about his finds for local clubs.

He was a contemporary of fellow Goodie Tim Brooke-Taylor and Monty Python star John Cleese at Cambridge University where he became a member of the world-famous Footlights comedy group.

Oddie's musical abilities helped him to lampoon pop songs and after touring the US he was signed up as a scriptwriter for That Was The Week That Was.

He went on to work on BBC radio's I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again and TV satire BBC 3, before eventually teaming up with Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden for a series called Broaden Your Mind, which became The Goodies.

The surreal series - in which the trio rode a three seater bike -
was once described by Oddie as Buster Keaton meets Tom and Jerry .

Notable moments from the show included a cat scaling the Post Office Tower and the bun fight at the OK tearooms.

A rumoured movie failed to come to fruition and budget constraints on the series meant The Goodies headed to ITV, but the show was dropped after one series.

He has lamented: The Goodies was great fun, but people have had a preconceived idea about what I can do ever since. I've been regarded as almost a cartoon figure because of it.

Oddie went on to develop his work with wildlife shows, spending the honeymoon to his second marriage in Papua New Guinea with a BBC film crew for the documentary Oddie In Paradise.

I know that Bill Oddie is associated with Bird Forum so there is every chance that he will read this thread.

So, good on yer Bill and well done.

Well, I only know Bill Oddie from what I've read here -- and I know Andrew is his biggest fan!

Congratulations!! I'm sure he deserves everything he is receiving, and more.

Now, wonder how we could go about getting some of his telelvision things on PBS?

Congratulations Bill.
Little Black Bird Book, Gone Birding and The Big Bird Race truly inspired me during the early stages of my birding. I read and read LBBB until it fell apart but was loathed to throw it out and still have it.

Cheers Bill

Mark

Charles; Bill's best sellers include his Guide to Birdwatching and his triple video of British Birds. You'll be able to get these and more once the Superstore reopens!

I'm not sure about the bbc videos.... are there any compilations of his various programmes? Certainly the Birdimages videos are available over here.
One thing about the videos is that most are in PAL format, hopefully multi region dvd's will solve this small problem.... then Bill can take on the world :)
My advice would be to get hold of his Little Black Bird Book .... this is as good a gets in terms of reading about British birders and their habits, slightly dated but still a great read.

And perhaps Peter will now explain the British Honours system to overseas members :)
Andy

Yes, it's the tried and tested system of patronage, by which the great and the good, not to mention the rich and successful, award civilian medals to people for Doing Good Things. The recipients usually come from the great and the good and are also successful. Often the two groups of people know each other very well. It's nepotism without being related!

However, sometimes good people get through and are actually rewarded for doing something worthwhile. Bill Oddie is a case in point.

Some people decline honours because they think the whole system stinks. Others, like John Lennon, return their medals in protest (in his case it was the M.B.E.).

All medals have initials (C.B.E. etc) which the holder is allowed to put after their names - on letters and so on. Some medals carry titles such as Sir or Dame.

Oh, and the lucky people get to go to Buckingham Palace to receive their gong. With me so far?

Peter

Well I can't wait to read the article in tommorows pic as u all no im a HUGE Bill Oddie Fan so ill say CONRATULATIONS Bill, Wonder next time he will get knighted lol?

Thank you so much for the info on Bill! I'd been wondering...

I just did a search at BBC America's website and found nothing for Mr Oddie. :C I'll have to continue searching to see if any of his books or videos are available on this side of the Atlantic.

So, what does O.B.E. in his award stand for?

Big congrats to Bill! For once you feel that the person getting the OBE rightly deserves it.

However, wasn't he a bit a of a lefty radical in his younger days? He might surprise us all and refuse it!

Dave

I was soo annoyed I missed This Is Your Life with Bill I knew hed b on but when? I dunno i was told by someone at skoll n i was soo annoyed so i bought The introduvtion book on birding by him n that made me better

Sylvia: LMG is quite right, it stands for Order of the British Empire. Ah, I hear you cry. But Britain no longer HAS an empire! This is the sort of detail that is utterly meaningless to us Brits. We will continue to have stiff upper lips and pretend we are still a force in the world. We carry on with our traditions regardless!

Just for the record, I believe that anyone can nominate someone for an OBE these days, it's the actual choosing that's down to the great and the good (which probably means civil servants?)!

I think it's the genuine enthusiasm, combined with a depth of knowledge and some cheeky humour that so endears him to the British public.

Whoever mentioned Oddie in Paradise -- that's a must-see programme.
I loved the Kenyan bird-race one, too!
I've got a complete set of Birdwatch magazine--for which Bill wrote a column for several years. Great stuff!
Congrats, Bill! Very well deserved.

There nothing mentioned in 2days paper about Bills award in The Daily Mail but there was somethin bout in yesterdays pa[er but it didn't say much bout Bill just said somethin like n bird man Bill gets a obe n thats it
