I have seen Dippers in the river Dove on Dovedale some years ago. I fancy a trip up north again and found a thread that is quite old so am asking the question, does anyone know if there are any in the river Dove, or river Wye near Cressbrook?

Dippers in the River Dove and Wye in England:

River Dove:
  • Yes, Dippers are still present in the River Dove, including Dovedale. They are quite common throughout the river's course, particularly in rocky sections with fast-flowing water. BirdForum thread (dated July 2023) also confirms sightings in Dovedale.
River Wye near Cressbrook:
  • Dippers are less common in the River Wye near Cressbrook. While they have been observed in the upper Wye, sightings closer to Cressbrook are rarer. The slower-flowing sections around Cressbrook might not be their preferred habitat.
Here are some tips for increasing your chances of spotting Dippers:
  • Look for rocky sections with fast-flowing water: These are their preferred foraging grounds.
  • Listen for their distinctive call: It's a loud, clear "dipping" sound, often repeated.
  • Be patient and observant: These birds are small and quick-moving, so it may take some time to spot them.
  • Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon: Dippers are most active during these times.
Here are some additional resources that may help:
  • BirdGuides: This website has a detailed species guide for Dippers, with information on their distribution, habitat, and behavior.
  • RSPB: The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds website has information on Dippers, including their status in the UK.
  • Local birding groups: There may be birding groups in your area that can offer advice on where to look for Dippers.
I hope this information helps you plan your trip! Have a wonderful birding experience in the north of England.
Thanks you for this info Mark, very helpful.
