Dorset birding (2 Viewers)

A sad find today at Lytchett Fields, a dead SEO by French's Viewpoint. It looks likely that it died from not catching enough food, but is being sent away to make sure it wasn't any other reason.

That's very sad.....one found dead on Portland recently too - do you happen to know if that bird had died through starvation?

Any news on the SEO PP also are the Pipits still on the pools field? still not caught up with yet.

No news on the SEO yet. Water Pipit are still present although numbers seem to have dropped in the last couple of days. This morning there were only 2 on Pools Field and 2 on the fields from the Viewpoints.

Went to Lytchett Fields early afternoon no Water Pipits, c100 Lapwing on Sherford Pools 7 Shelduck, 8 Shelduck ,1 Green Sandpiper on FF and bust my scope, a large gust of windy blew my tripod over and the scope broke of its tripod mounting foot|=(|

Redhead Smew reported in Holes Bay this morning, south of the railway bridge, maybe last winters bird returning. No time to check today, will try and check it out tomorrow weather permitting.

Holes Bay Smew

Re-found the redhead Smew in Holes Bay this morning 100mtrs south of the railway bridge, but about 200mtrs out from the cycle path shoreline.

Also 5 Goldeneye, 4 RB Mergs and 5 GC Grebes all south of the bridge.

Baiter

Great views this morning of a Great Northern Diver just off the beach along Baiter. At times only 6ft off shore.

Nice to see him that close, only ever seen them round the Brand's Bay area

Hi Martin, I know you occasionally visit Baiter. It really is worth regular quick visits throughout winter, as much can turn up. The GND had been seen daily since Wednesday. I've also had both Red and Black-throated from there. A couple of years ago there was a long staying Slavonian anda bit further back there was a Red-breasted Goose in with the Brents.

Thanks Ian I must try and get there more often, same as shore road I only seem to get down there while on my christmas holidays to see the Sanderlings.

Had a quick visit to Longham Lakes this afternoon after doing family stuff.
Beside the usual stuff, there was a Green Sandpipier on the samll island and a Kestrel searching the west bank and cause way.

Been visiting the inlaws in Poole. The Smew still present by the railway bridge, Holes Bay today. 1 Sandwich Tern off Baiter yesterday (not sure how normal that is at this time of year).
