Looks like Violet Dropwing, Trithemis annulata to me.
Thanks. That's what I had originally labelled it as but reviewing the pictures I thought the pattern under the abdomen and the pterostigmata were wrong. However glad to have a better informed id. That and wandering glider were my two most wanted odonata and I saw plenty of the latter at Mindelo water treatment works but almost always in flight
