Galápagos - Floreana Island - Sandpiper ID? (1 Viewer)

Hi all,

Just returning from an amazing trip to the Galápagos. An incredible experience!

Looking through my photos and came back
to a peep I couldn’t identify at the time, and still having trouble.

Seen on beach near Punto Cormorán on north side of Floreana island.

There were two in a pair, on the beach, right on the edge of the waves. What appeared to be clearly white on underparts, overall grey in color, and legs appeared yellowish or greenish (although they do appear dark in these compressed photos).

Did not see anymore of these sandpipers on the island, just the pair. Unfortunately didn’t seem them fly away so don’t have any notes on what they look like or behavior in flight.

These were small, 6 to 8 inches from beak to tail. Beak not stubby- looks to be longer than head.





Least? Semipalmated? White-rumped? Baird’s? Please help if you have any insight!

Legs look oddly orangey in pic 2 but the right colour for least sandpiper in the others. Bill is right: fine and slightly-drooping tip. Feeding on dry sand isn't their typical habit, but... 🤷🏻

Again, look for general impression, size, and shape, then fill in the field marks.

In looking at one or a few photos some time after the actual sighting, size is usually impossible to judge and general impression and shape may be misleading. Focus on field marks.

Correct! I misstepped and spoke. This is at first glance a Least 100%.
