gulls (4 Viewers)

Hi Jan/Lou,
is there amy chance of links showing adult Yellow Legged Gulls (Western or Eastern) which have been taken in October / November?

Many thanks

Derek

Thanks Lou,
i was recently on Fuerteventura and i was struck by the number of apparent adults who had black on the bill (in one roost count 48 out of 53). Some had black on both mandibles although less that the birds from the Azores appear to have. Will post pics when i get round to sorting them out!

thanks again

derek

Hi chaps,

I photographed this bird at the weekend locally.

I've chalked it up as a 2nd winter YLG.

What do you guys think?

Cheers,

Andy.

Got a few more but they might not add very much. I'll edit them tomorrow if that's OK.

In the meantime, have a look at this image. It was taken with the scope on 60X so it's not great.

Cheers,

Andy.

Any comments about this one? I'm struggling to age this bird. Maybe a 4cy with an aberrant bill?

correct, plumagewise it looks like a 4cy, a retarded one in terms of bill coloration (unfortuntely it warms its feet so we can't see its legs). bill seems slightly deformed too so this may complete the impression of a retarded individual (i speculate that some metabolistic things are involved to prevent a normal developement). seeing its primary pattern it resembles much that of adults, with a rel. large p10 mirror (would be very large for a 3cy), long bajonetts in this ind (right wing, 2nd pic), but it also exibits 3 almost completely plain brown primary coverts and some brown in alula which many YLGs at this age don't show anymore. sometimes advanced 3cy and retarded 4cy are not easy to distuingish.

This has been posted on the ID page: http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=157862 Any ideas??

Hello Josh (et al),

Pity you couldn't join us today mate. Maybe next weekend?

Anyway, here's something that was on ARC last knockings (it was literally dark!).

Like buses: You don't get one for ages and then two come along together! (I also had a 3rd winter bird across the river at Rainham yesterday.)

Cheers,

Andy.
