Hello everyone,

I am quite new to bird watching. My neighbour gave me a Canon EOS 2000D to practice with. Weather has been bad lately but looking forward to getting out and using it. If anyone else has the same camera or similar please feel free to give me tips.

Sorry in advance if I ask any stupid questions.

Lisa

Hi Lisa and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. You might want to head to our Canon forum, I'm sure they'll be able to give you some tips : Canon

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Hi and welcome to the forum.I think you will find us a friendly and helpful group. As Delia linked above the best place to ask about the camera and lenses is the Canon forum. The people over there will be happy to help.

Hi Lisa,

I used Canon EF-S 55-250mm F/4.0-5.6 IS STM with my 700D a few years ago for bird photography. I think your camera is quite similar to what I used. That lens and the camera combination is not the best for bird photography but worth a try. Probably, you will find one in the second hand market for a cheaper price. I am going to use my same old setup again for bird photography as I don’t have a better option right now.

Welcome to BF. I'm in the north of Gloucestershire. I used to be a designer / photographer, so feel free to PM if you have any questions or images that you want to share or critique.

With your 'new' camera - to begin with, as well as photographing birds - I would photograph the wider world around you, such as landscapes and plants... subjects that you can get close to or immerse yourself in, and are less erratic than birds.

Birds in the wild are a pretty difficult (and tiny) subject to capture without specialist gear and it's not always easy to get close enough to them, so try to encourage them to come to you, with a bird feeder in the garden.

You could also visit a bird sanctuary (I've not been, but friends say there's a really good owl sanctuary in Newent, or even go to Bristol zoo) where you can get right up to your subject.

Good luck.

Thank you PT. I've been to the owl centre a couple of times before on a day out and a few years ago on a school trip. It is a good idea for practice and I could post some owl photos (if they're good enough). I love the outdoors so I will be practicing on other things as we're surrounded by some nice countryside and I like to go to Wales a few times a year such as Brecon on picnics etc.

Appreciate the offer for asking questions or getting your thoughts on my images. I use Teleguard a lot which is a good privacy focused messenger so please feel free to add me on there too. My ID at the moment is 3KH4SZHZW. I really appreciate your help and ideas.
