Charles Brewer-Carías (b.1939) is a Venezuelan dentist, who, after 20 years in practice, became an explorer and speleologist. He is well known to the indigenous people of the Venezuelan highlands, as he fixed their teeth while exploring their territory. He was shot by thieves (2003) but, despite some loss of flexibility in his shoulder, still explores. The world's largest quartzite cave is named after him, as are two amphibians.
