You'll never pronounce it like a native but you can at least try. Putin is pronounced Poo-tin, very simple yet so many people persist in saying 'Pyutin'

Is that long "a" pronounced as in Prague, Pray, Pad or even Pug?

The 'Sprag' name actually rhymed with 'drag', 'hag' or 'rag'. However, the rich Devonian accent makes the 'a' sound much longer than in 'Prague'!
