How long before a premium Chinese binocular? (2 Viewers)

I don't think the Chinese will ever produce an alpha level binocular comparable to the big three. Name 5 things that China makes that is the best. They survive on mediocrity and they will continue to. I don't think it is in their culture to want to make the best and I don't think it ever will be. I think they lack the innovation to produce ground breaking ideas and products. They tend to copy and follow and they are good at that. All the Zenrays are are a cheap copy of the Swarovski EL's. Everybody has copied the open bridge design of the EL so I guess that is the sincerest form of flattery. Swarovski comes out with the Swarovision and the field flattener technology and then Zenrays copies them with the Zenray Prime. The Chinese COPY and that's all they do. What new innovation have they come up with in binoculars. Nothing.

Dennis, I must say that's going too far, a harsh generalisation from a few aspects one has got to know, at a time of transition from a type of communism to some yet unclear state. (I don't doubt what you have said of your experiences.)

It has been said above: innovation is the main thing that keeps the European premium brands currently ahead of the Chinese. Swaro with the open frame and now field flatteners, Zeiss with the different focussing mechanism, Leica with a new prism design (see current Geovid thread). Though all these are small steps, they keep them ahead of the Chinese.

Now we have to see that the European companies have to do this, innovation, and high quality is their only way of surviving, as with their high labour costs they have no chance in the market of mass products.

I believe that the Chinese companies would very soon be able to start to innovate themselves: they have already passed from the stage of making bad copies to making very good copies, the next step would be making innovative things themselves. However the point is that they do not need to do this, they still are better than everyone else in making reasonabale quality for reasonable prices. So I think as long as they can compete well in the mass market, they will keep their focus here.

The change will only come when Chinese labour costs get too high and other countries take over the production of mass products. For textile products this has already happend, but I guess for more sophisticated things such as optics, this will still take a good while.

I think you are straying into unfortunate territory (I am choosing my words carefully). The Japanese started out producing cheap goods, and moved into up market goods. The Koreans are world class in many electronic goods. Do not underestimate the Chinese. There are Chinese communities in many countries, and wherever they settle, they outperform the locals, in terms of educational levels and salaries. They have a very strong culture that respects achievement. What the mainland Chinese suffered was a government that stifled freedom, first Imperialism, then Nationalism, then Communism. Take a look at the patents granted for graphene in recent years, China dominates. In science and technology China will become a big player. They are led by old men with a scientific background, unlike in Britain, where we are led largely by lawyers, ex-marketing people, and career politicians with arts degrees.

I agree with a lot of what Florian says. The problem from our viewpoint is - as Florian says - if China innovates. On the bright side, China is a huge market for Western companies to sell into.

Name 5 Chinese products that are the best. What electronic goods are the Koreans world class in?

Is it me or are some of the Americans bias ?
If not even rude?
Even if I don't like a country I wouldn't go as far to call it a cesspool

Not you. I was referring to the comment that was first said and had already been deleted. ;) This was to let you know that it had been removed.

It appears that our friends from across the pond have run smack dab into the anti-Chinese sentiment that is so prevalent in our country. I tend to equate it with the anti-hunting sentiment that is common in The UK. Both tend to be regional issues.

Have you heard of Samsung? Their electronics are everywhere, in TV screens and TVs (not necessarily Samsung branded), computers, games consoles and so on, as well as in their own consumer goods. Have you heard of LG? They too make electronics and consumer goods.

And of course:

Anyone who underestimates Korea, or China, may find the future unsettling. |=)|

I would say we are not as a people anti-hunting, although of course some Brits are, but we are anti-firearms, if you see the distinction. However, probably best not to open that can of worms.

Nationally, there are about 4000 Wal-Mart stores in the states along with about 600 Sam's Clubs. Although some people, uncongenially, describe them as "Chinese Outlet Stores" it argues, I think, more for Pro-Chinese sentiment than anti.
