How many species of owl have you seen (2 Viewers)

4 from earlier this year, taking me to 37 (+ the mystery "San Isidro" Owl, and + heard-only Foothill Screech-Owl):

Band-bellied Owl (Wildsumaco, Ecuador)
Rufescent Screech-Owl (Wildsumaco, Ecuador)
Black-and-white Owl (Chiapas, Mexico)
Central American Pygmy-Owl (Chiapas, Mexico)

Added these two beauties on Taliabu;

Taliabu Masked Owl
Sula Scops Owl

Brings my total to 145 now although I don't think Clements includes Sula Scops yet although IOC do. That's 131 Clements owls now then so not far off Alan and Pete now! Expecting a bit of a boost when the Philippine Ninox make there way on.

Rob

One.
Had a family of Long Eared (Osio otus) just next to our house a number of years back. What a treat watching the five owlets grow and learn to fly.

Just came across this thread late yesterday and I was very impressed.

Only 3 for me though...Little Owl, Barn Owl and Short eared Owl.

Can I just ask if you do have some photos of the rare Owls that we do not have in Opus, quite a few that have been mentioned over the life of this thread would it be possible to put a photo of it as well. I have found 2 brand new Opus Birds thanks to Rob with his Sri Lanka Bay Owl and Koepcke's Screech Owl by antshrike69. The photos are appreciated and you do get full credit for them in Opus.

Rob if you do have any photos of the first four that you mention in #379 we do not have any photos of those.

Hmmm, it seems after glossing over this thread many times - I've never posted!

So here goes:
Powerful Owl (juvenile), but have heard many majestically calling throughout the mountains
Masked Owl (unfortunately dead - hit by a car)
Barking Owl (sadly not barking, let alone 'screaming')
Southern Boobook Owl (including one tangled up with fishing line in a tree - gladly a full recovery upon rescue)
Barn Owl (sadly crawled under the car in the carport to escape the near dozen Noisy Miners mobbing it - and died - suspect poisoning, or starvation)
Tawny Frogmouth Owl (2x nests, 5 youngun's fledged - too many (3) became early roadkill)
Australian Owlet-Nightjar (included 'cause they're silent gliders too & just so darn cute!)

Sorry for the gruesome toll! it's not just hollow and natural prey loss, from clearing old growth woodland /forest along riparian corridors and alluvial flats that takes its toll - just merely day to day efforts to survive ..... :-C

Chosun :gh:

a feeble effort for me, but worth posting as it gives me something to laugh at in future years... :D

UK
Barn Owl
Little Owl
Short-eared Owl

rest of Europe
Tawny Owl (in the middle of Vienna!)

rest of the world
Verreaux's Eagle-Owl (Samburu Nature Reserve, Kenya)

Went looking for a great grey owl that had been spotted not far from Stockholm on a recent trip to Sweden for work, but didn't manage to find it (and sadly my conscience got the better of me so went off to catch up on work!)

Slight modification to my earlier list - no new species sadly (having had another failed attempt to track down a missing species in Scandinavia - this time Hawk Owls near Oslo)....

But, Tawny Owl is now on my UK list also, having had one glide right over me in the middle of Cambridge recently.

So:

UK
Barn Owl
Little Owl
Short-eared Owl
Tawny Owl

rest of Europe
Tawny Owl (in the middle of Vienna!)
