Ideas on places to visit near Lichfield (1 Viewer)

Hello JH, I typed Lichfield into the search and your post came up. I'm hoping for some advice; I'm visiting Lichfield later this month and I'll have the chance of a day birding - I wonder if you could suggest some suitable local sites / locations? I'll have the use of a car so I should be able to visit a few places.

Hope you don't mind, but I've moved your post to the Staffs Forum, as I think you'll be more likely to get the input you need there. I also subscribed you to the thread so you can find it more easily.

While you're waiting for a response, you might have a look in the Opus articles, there may be something of interest amongst them.

Best place is probably RSPB Milddleton Lakes. OK so only half of it is actually in Staffordshire....

Croxall Lakes can be good but I've found it a bit on the quiet side this winter. Nearly is an area known as Whitmore Haye. Good chance of seeing Tree Sparrow and Yellowhammer there and possibly Corn Bunting. Then there's Cannock Chase but that's quite a large area and I haven't personally been up there this winter so I don't know what's about or where.

Only just seen your post, but if it's not too late, you would find it very useful to keep looking at two key blogs/websites .... StaffsBirdNews and Tame Valley Birding, both of which are included in an all encompassing Midlands birding link
birdingtoday.co.uk , which is where I would start, for two reasons.

By clicking on its West Midlands (regional) link it shows you all the key bird news sites for the local counties and, secondly and most importantly for you, each county link (eg Staffordshire and Warwickshire) giving you details and maps of the various locations.

thanks for taking the trouble to reply, much appreciated. I've been laid up with the flu so I'm belatedly catching up with correspondence. Thanks for the tips, both of those links are new to me so that's very useful. Migration seems to be starting - saw a common redstart out of the window at work today here in Suffolk, so hopeful that's a good omen for this weekend!
