Aus Roça Congulu Amboim, Benguella, sandte Herr Rudolf Braun 2 Exemplare einer sehr kennt lichen neuen Rasse von Apalis rufogularis.

The Eponym Dictionary of Birds claims:
Braun's Bush-shrike Laniarius brauni Bannerman, 1939 [Alt. Orange-breasted Bush-shrike]
Buff-throated Apalis ssp. Apalis rufogularis brauni Stresemann, 1934
Rudolf H. Braun (b.1908) was a German collector who was active in Angola (1942) nd southern Africa. A botanical collection he made is held in Swaziland. A reptile is named after him.
The Key to Scientific Names
Rudolf H. Braun (b. 1908) German collector in Angola (subsp. Apalis rufogularis, Laniarius).

If I read here he published
  • Rudi (Rudolf H.) Braun (1930): Beiträge zur Biologie der Vögel von Angola – Journal für Ornithologie – 78_1930: 47 - 49.
  • Rudolf Braun (1934): Biologische Notizen über einige Vögel Nord-Angolas – Journal für Ornithologie – 82_1934: 553 - 560.
No idea if he has a middle name with H and what his life dates are. Maybe it will be solved here.

Non-bird sidetrack ...

Rudolf H. Braun (b.1908) was a German collector ... A reptile is named after him.
I sure hope that Beolens et al. wasn't thinking of the Reptile/Lizard Braun's Mabuya Trachylepis brauni (TORNIER, 1902), a k a Ukinga Montane Skink, as the one named after "our guy", as claimed here!?

But ... it actually seems like they did!? See here. Also see the list of references here.

How would that even work? If he truly was born in 1908, of course ...

OD of the Reptile itself; here, as "Mabuia brauni" TORNIER 1902:
Die Art ist zu Ehren des Zoologen Prof. Dr. BRAUN in Königsberg benannt.
... which I assume is this Prof. Dr. ('Max') Braun.

Sigh!

Yet another reason to doubt what told in the Eponym dictionaries ...

However, nothing found re. the death of "our guy".

Björn

PS. Neither one of them are to be confused with the Botanist Karl Braun (1870–1935), commemorated in the amphibian/toad/frog Amietophrynus/Sclerophrys brauni NEIDEN 1910/11 (here), as "Bufo brauni".
