little big year (1 Viewer)

Hello to one and all, birders and site persons and whoever else.
I live in Westchester County, NY, and my children, after having seen the movie 8 times, have concluded we should do a collective big year.
It matters not to them that we started August 1st, lol.
So I deem it "the Little Big Year." So far, as of August 18th, we have 18 birds.
Fear not, though: that number will increase (we hope) when we visit Vermont next week, Block Island in early October, Cape May a week later, Central Park now and again, and various places in New England and upstate NY during the autumn.
I am secretly hoping to crack 100 and go from there. In our own county and nearby Connecticut (we live close to the Audubon in Greenwich) there are allegedly some 400+ species to be seen, so there's opportunity.

If they're still interested, we'll go to McAllen TX in the winter and get a jump on 2013. Meantime, I'm trying to get my old eyes used to focusing through binoculars.
Peace, J

Hi there and a warm welcome to you from those of us on staff here at BirdForum :t:

You should be able to add a bunch by visiting Central Park, NYC ;) Migration is under way ;)

Please keep us updated on your additions. It's always a pleasure to see.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Sounds like you've caught the bug.

Welcome to BirdForum! I am sure you will find lots to interest you here, and I hope you enjoy your visits.

Went to Vermont and saw a few.
Saw a lot more at VINS in Quechee, more raptors than I might ever see in the wild...but they were all rescue birds in cages, so they don't "count."
Golden Eagles were magnificent.

Hi PapaOwl and a warm welcome from me too

It sounds like you're having a great time. Yes, Golden Eagles are magnificent, aren't they.

Glad you enjoyed your visit at VINS... I volunteer there on Sundays. The Goldens are magnificent indeed, and they have interesting temperments.
There are Goldens that migrate up and down the Appalachians; one has a GPS tracker from Seaturtle.org; you can see her location by searching their site for "Virgil Cane". I hope to see one in migration some day.
