Mallard or black duck central Scotland (1 Viewer)

This duck was with a group of mallards this morning (10th June) on a small lake in central Scotland. Many of the males were just changing over in to eclipse plumage, and that may well be what this is, but it stood out as unusually dark and dull coloured. Is there any way to rule out American Black Duck from these pictures? They are the only pictures, it was distant and I didn't have my scope with me so saw no more detail than this.

Could you give the exact location- there had been a black duck in Scotland which stayed for quite a long while.

Here's a larger edit of your 2nd photo Dawsy.

Isn't there enough here with the neck and head markings?
