Mallorca 2012 (2 Viewers)

Hello,
this is a nice Thread :)

I was 08.2012 there and we stayed near the Albufera Reserve in Alcudia. Very hot and not much water there. But, first time for my long lens to come with me in vacation.

I have nearly the same picture from the osprey there :))
also pictures from herons (purple, night, grey), marsh harrier, hoopoes, warblers and so on.
It was the wrong month (toooo hot), but it is a beautifull place, also the other spots there.

I did not read the whole thread, but Highly recommendable is the informative Majorca Birding Guide:
http://www.birdingmajorca.com/

and an early/late permission, wich you can get in the information center for free.
The Guide is also available there.

an example from there:

Dave Gosney has also recently updated his guide book and accompanied it with a DVD. A review is available http://birdingtoday.co.uk/finding_birds_in_mallorca_dave_gosney_120.html.

First mallorca birding trip

Just got home from my first trip birding in Mallorca and so pleased to have seen two Black Vultures at the Boquer Valley amongst lots of wonderful European specialities.

Something causing me some confusion though, on my last day (26/10/12) I saw one solitary Bee-Eater. It seems late to me for bee-eaters but does Mallorca keep some right through winter or could this perhaps be a late leaver?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Yes, a very late date for Bee-eater indeed, but one was reported in the south on the same day so you can count that one! They are usually all gone August/ September at the latest so it is a very unusual record.

Good numbers of Common Crane being seen, mostly in flight, but they often settle near Salobrar de Campos so I will have a look around the adjoining fields tomorrow. Also Black Redstarts, Song Thrushes and Robins pouring through with around 500 Black Redstarts in the Bóquer Valley today. (Thanks Dan) Mike

Three Alpine Swift past the apartment this morning was a bit of a shock, a late date. Also two Turnstones seen on the rocks from the Son Real reserve.

Good numbers of Common Crane around the Island and all winter species now in, Song Thrushes, Black Redstarts, Skylarks,White Wagtails and Robins. Wild flowers appearing in the fields which makes winter birding all the better. Mike

Red Kite, Booted Eagle and Osprey today at Cap de Ses Salines. Also big numbers of Song and Mistle Thrush, 36 Ravens,a good number here, Balearic Warbler and Meadow Pipit. Also I saw a Stork sp. from the car over Llucmajor, there has been one hanging around I am told, I would guess it was a White Stork but it was a brief glimpse.
