Mallorca 2012 (2 Viewers)

A Black stork at Salobrar de Campos is a good bird, seen yesterday but may still be in the area. Some thrushes coming through, White wagtails around as are Robins. Looking forward to seeing Black redstarts returning.

Arrived back home to a chilly Scotland after 2 weeks of hot weather at Puerto Pollenca.
We did really well for birds, considering how hot and dry it was.
I was surprised to see 11 Great White Egrets at S'Albufereta, didn't realise they were as common here as that.
Boquer valley was good, often seemed like the birds had changed overnight. One day it was full of Spotted Flycatchers, Pied Flycatchers, Whearears and Robins and a day later we had Black Redstarts, Redstarts, Song Thrushes and Blackbirds.
Had excellent views of both Back and griffon vultures on the road up past LLuc , at least 15 birds all came off a mountainside together....great to watch.
Plenty of Eleanora's Falcons up at Formentor too, fantastic to watch them from the cliffs there.
Visited S'Albufera quite a few times and picked up a lot of new birds there, even managed to find Deporadora .
Son Real was very good for birds and we got our 1st woodchat Shrike there as well as Thekla and short-toed Lark.

Boquer Valley

Torrential rain, so was late out, and a change of plan. Had intended to visit s A'lbuferra but thought the weather may have forced some migrants down. The 'pine avenue' at the north of Puerto Pollensa was full of Willow Warbler, Chiff Chaff and Robin.

More Blue Rock Thrush sightings in Boquer Valley, at least 2 birds. 2 Pied Flycatcher, Stone Chat, Black Cap, Song Thrush, 2 Eleanoras Falcon, 2 Crag Martin, c 100 Greenfinch/Goldfinch below gated entrance. 2 Raven, 1 gave amazing close up performance to within 50 feet at eye level. Over 2 dozen Redstart and 4 Black Redstart counted, 2 distant Eagle species, 3 Wheatear and a pair of Ring Ouzel. No megas, but a very enjoyable days birding...and then some lovely late afternoon sunshine to cheer the soul further !

Richard.

No megas Richard but I have been trying to see Ring ouzel for seven years!! It is a very hard bird to catch up with here, even life long local birders have only seen a couple each. Thought you might stumble across something good, well done. Mike

nice one richard, a good spread of birds.

Cuber Reservoir

Fabulous views on the bus up to Cuber. I had been given negative reports on the birding quality by two pairs of birders over the last few days so wasn't too hopeful.

Passerines were a little scarce and I didn't get any of the local stars ( moustached warbler, sub alp, rock thrush) that I had read about. Willow Warbler, Grey Wagtail, Greenfinch, Wheatear, Robin, Blackcap and stonechat were the only passerines in sight. My main taget of the trip was Vultures and I was certainly not dissapointed. Black Vulture within 2 minutes of arriving, then regular sightings of Griffon Vulture and Booted Eagle. A lovely low flyover by a Red Kite just before I left finished the day off nicely.

It looks like there has been a fall of Bluethroats, possibly as many as twenty birds have been seen around the depuradora. Bóquer Valley, Redstarts, Pied flycatcher and a report of a Rock thrush.

Richard, I'm visiting Mallorca in May and intend visiting the Cuber reservoir and as I don't drive the bus sounds ideal, can you give me any info as to where you catch the bus and where it stops in relation to the cuber? Is it far to walk from the bus stop? Thanks John

Hello,
this is a nice Thread :)

I was 08.2012 there and we stayed near the Albufera Reserve in Alcudia. Very hot and not much water there. But, first time for my long lens to come with me in vacation.

I have nearly the same picture from the osprey there :))
also pictures from herons (purple, night, grey), marsh harrier, hoopoes, warblers and so on.
It was the wrong month (toooo hot), but it is a beautifull place, also the other spots there.

I did not read the whole thread, but Highly recommendable is the informative Majorca Birding Guide:
http://www.birdingmajorca.com/

and an early/late permission, wich you can get in the information center for free.
The Guide is also available there.

an example from there:

Good numbers of Swallow and House Martin through today. Both Mistle and Song Thrush around the Island and still some Ring Ouzels in the Bóquer Valley. Also Redstarts and Black Redstarts, Wheatears and one Balearic Warbler showing there. Mike
