March Moths (2 Viewers)

Twin-spot Quaker added to the year list overnight, along with 15 Common Quakers and 2 Small; 5 Hebrew Characters and 2 Clouded Drabs made up the balance of a decent trap.

Edit: another NFY found by glancing out of the window: a Double-striped Pug on the outside of the pane that I'd failed to notice while checking the trap.

Went to my first trapping session at dawn this morning at a local nature reserve. Cooler than recent nights at 5c & cloudy. 12 moths of 6 species:

Acleris notana/ferrugana (probably former as in mainly oak woodland)
Chestnut
Common Quaker 3
Small Quaker 4
Hebrew Character 2
Diurnea fagella

Trapped last night and a glance in before going to bed suggested quite a few in the trap. Results this morning very satisfying:

Yellow Horned new for the garden as well as NFY; Early Grey NFY; Diurnea fagella NFY.

Of the species already on the year-list, 2 Double-striped Pug, one on the wall and one in the trap; 24 Common Quaker; 4 Small Quaker; 3 Hebrew Character and 2 Clouded Drab.

Thanks to Ken - see thread in Moth ID - I'm now in a position to fully list last night's catch in (and around) the back garden moth trap:

New for me, garden and of course year, Semioscopis avellanella

NFY: Acleris literana and Brindled Pug

The rest: 44 Common Quaker, 4 Small Quaker, Twin-spotted Quaker, 3 Oak Beauty, 4 Clouded Drab, Yellow Horned, Double-striped Pug, Early Grey.

Massive!

Compares well against my 6 Macros of 3!…which included just 2 CQ’s + a NFY Oak Beauty.😩

Routine trap contents this morning, 17 Common Quakers, 6 Hebrew Characters, 2 Clouded Drabs and an Early Grey.

Less routine: Marion called me to the front step to see a caterpillar marching across the flagstones: a Large Yellow Underwing if my caterpillar field guide is to be trusted. Do I put it on this year's moth list?

Not a big catch last night (more hopeful about tonight):

Hebrew Character 3, Small Quaker 5. That's all folks!

Mind you, looking out at the trap mid-evening I caught sight of a strange light in the sky and called Maz to look at it. I took some fuzzy pictures but we'd no idea what it was: tentatively we thought it might be one of those stupid Chinese lanterns. Turns out it was seen right up and down the country!
