May 2009 Moths (1 Viewer)

last night produced just a single moth but it was a case of quality rather than quantity. I got a Glaucous Shears which is one i caught last year aswell, so must be a bit of a hotspot round here!

A little better last night with the wind dropping and plenty of cloud cover.

I had three nfy's:

Small Dusty Wave
Bright-line Brown-eye
The Fern

(sorry, not the best of photos, bad light and windy!)

Hopefully the year will get better and not be as poor as last year. Hardly anything of note for me so far.

Last night only one new for the year list:
Coxcomb Prominent.

Other highlights:
Pale Prominent 1
Lime Hawk Moth 1
Spectacle 1

Brimstones building in numbers over recent nights.

It will be my first attempt at moth - ing tonight, it will be dry, maybe windy, just a few will do as it could take soem time to ID
Time will tell...

Hardly anything here in my trap the last week- due to clear, cold nights with wind and bright moonshine.

A few new for the year though:

Early thorn- Selenia dentaria 3
May Highflyer- Hydriomena impluviata 1
Diamond-back Moth- Plutella xylostella 1
Glaucous Shears- Papestra biren 1 (to pheromones for Panolis flammea)

I also had a short trip to the south west coast of Norway, and found a few moths I have never seen before during a 20 minutes attempt with pheromones for Emperor Moth, and one hour with light and a white sheet, later the same evening (1 sth of may):

Emperor Moth- Saturnia pavonia 3 (males) to pheromones
Great prominent- Peridea anceps 1
Lunar Marbled Brown- Drymonia ruficornis 1
Ringed Carpet- Cleora cinctaria 1
Diurnea fagella 2

Well, thankfully just 7 in the trap - did not think there would be any and the ID has taken some time this morning - at least stay put in a pot, unlike birds!
4 Hebrew Character
1 Common Quaker
1 pebble Prominent
1 Flame Shoulder

Really enjoyed that!

My catch was very poor last night. I thought it would be but I had to be up at 4.00 a.m. anyway having been volunteered to lead a dawn chorus walk (which was quite fun, with nightingale, cuckoo and tawny owl all heard well).
Back to the moths:
flame shoulder
brindled pug 2
brimstone
muslin moth,
common quaker (first for a couple of weeks)

A small catch from a clear night with a huge moon.

Peppered moth (nfy)
Maiden's Blush (new in my garden)
Shuttle-shaped Dart (4)
Flame Shoulder
Eudonia angustea

and a swarm of gnats

It's a slippery slope, trust me! I'm completely addicted after only a few weeks so be careful...

Last night started very well although little after midnight.

Eyed Hawk Moth - superb individual, flashing its 'eyes' and rocking side to side.
Common Marbled Carpet 1
Garden Carpet 2
Shuttle-shaped Dart 3
Muslin 1
Brimstone 3
Clouded Drab 1
Phtheochroa rugosana 1
Syndemis musculana 2
