Melodious Warbler at Souter Point, Co. Durham (second clump of bushes south of the Lighthouse)

Anyone been for this yet?

I'll be down there tomorrow morning

Got it this morning, superb!

Hi Darrell,
Yes it is - for the first few days when it was present, the weather was cool, very windy and wet - so it was never seen well if at all, only heard singing from deep cover. Once I was told that, the apparent howler becomes much more understandable - the song is very similar to Marsh Warbler. As soon as the weather improved and it started to show well, the correction was made.

Maybe this should go on the 'iffy ticks' thread, but one local birder there this morning joked that he'd got 3 ticks out of this bird, first Marsh Warbler, then Icterine Warbler, and finally Melodious Warbler :-O

I've just been on a wild goose (or should I say sandpiper) chase this morning. A Pec sand has been reported for a couple of days at Maer Lake in Cornwall. Steve Madge and I went to see it and found everyone happily ticking off a well marked Wood sand, and had been since Thursday. A second, poorly marked Wood sand was also there but because they didn't look the same the assumption was made that breast band & yellowish legs = Pec sand, ah well!!

Back to the thread! just realised that Melodious is a good record in the North East, especially in July.

Darrel,

One of the local reserves near me had groups of both common and green sandpipers being entered in the list book during April this year. Now I was there a lot during April, and there was a group of sandpipers there for a number of days, and they all looked the same to me, and they all looked like common sandpiper too.

But depending on which day you went there'd be a 'knowledgeable' geezer with scope in hide pointing out 'green sandpiper' over on the small island, or a 'knowledgeable' geezer with scope in hide pointing out 'common sandpiper' over on the middle island.

Michael, this is why Britain is an amazing place to bird. I don't get too excited about Melodious Warbler, I can see them annually in Cornwall, and have even found a few. However tell me that there's a Bluethroat about and I'll be there before dawn ( assuming that the ID is correct :)

Still present mid afternoon at least....lets hope its there tomorrow morning when i get up there!!
Oh, and the White-winged Black Tern would be nice too!

Hi Steve some pics on Surfbirds as well, have we got no forum members with cameras from the North East?

Saw the bird yesterday, for a warbler it was very easy to see and hear and avery enjoyable lifer, off today to try and see a Hobby in Northumberland.

Visited the North-East this morning and saw the Melodious Warbler, what a cracking bird, showing well and singing its heart out....well worth the trip for such excellent views!
