Meteor Showers
One 'shooting star' display always guaranteed to please is the Perseids. At the peak, and with a good dark horizons you may be able to see a maximum of 80 meteors an hour.

The peak occurs in the early morning hours of the 13th. Fortunately, this is just two days before New Moon. This means the sky will be nice and dark, and the moon's light will not intrude on this fine shower at all.

cheers
Tony

Hi Tony

I have heard about this on the news today. People in the UK are able to see these Meteor Showers tonight too.

The sky is clear at Bedford, but no sign of any action so far. I looked about 11pm, and stood for 15 mins outside but to no avail.

Seeing this type of thing with the naked eye may be not so good as a piece of equipment, which will allow a person to see things up close and personal

Maybe the fact it needs a bit of patience too! :eek!:

Hi Kathy

Between 1 and 2am supposed to be best
I've seen 3 so far about 20 min ago
they move too fast for bins or scope!

cheers
Tony

Hi Tony and Kathy,

I've been waiting for this for days Tony, can't see any thing as yet, but plenty of time yet as it's set to go almost right through til morning. If it's anything like the ones we saw about 6 years ago, it'll be brilliant, though this is supposed to be better!

Forget the bins Kathy, far better just to watch.....patiently!;)

Sue.

hi Tony/Sue

tony you have seen them already - oh you are so lucky. So bins are no good - now I know! :-O

Sue: It sounds good natural thing to see. Yes I will take my time here, and hope it all happens now.

I will stay up, and see if it is possible to see them. Will keep on looking every so often- between 1-2am, yes I will go for that.

It is once in a lifetime experience too.

I will let you know if I see any now?

hi Sue/Tony

Wow I saw one just this very moment. Great news and worth waiting for.

They are fairly big so you cannot miss them. It looked like a moving star with a tail attached. woww I see this as a good luck omen.

Yes, you are better to see them with the naked eye only :t:

I saw the ISS pass over soon after 10pm. I woke at 1.30 and looked out of the bedroom window for meteors. I saw a few but there was a fair amount of cloud around.
It got better though. A large pale shape settled on the roof of my shed. I think it was probably a tawny owl. It flew off and within a few seconds another shape came from the left. I don't know whether the owl had flown round the house or it was another one.
It made up for not seeing any spectacular meteors.

Sorry sorry sorry sorry Tony!
I didnt see your thread before I posted my shooting star Q?
Please forgive the oversight x

Hi Tony,

I didn't see a thing last night but will keep looking as they are set to continue for a few days yet! Sleepless nights this week, we shall all be kn*****ed by Wednesday!:-O

Hi pam
I don't know about Wednesday, I'm kn*****ed now!!
I sat in the garden till 2.15am, huddled in a blanket
I saw a couple of dozen meteors in all 4 or 5 of them spectacular!

Cheers all
Tony

Hi All No luck here in Liverpool very clouded over so no real hope of seeing this Meteor shower this year. Tonight is not as good for observing them but they will still be visible after this it becomes difficult to see them.

PeterK (Nice blue sky at the moment though)

Great you saw some Tony! I just saw a few stars, clouds and my bed beckoning me:-O

Now go and have a couple of hours sleep and try again tonight! Take a hottie bottle and hip flask outside with you tonight to keep the chill offo:D

Yes, Mary! All those ideas about sitting in the garden with a little glass of something went by the board - too cold and too late!

Wonderful thread, is it unusual to see the Perseids in the UK?

I didn't see anything myself, the peak was just before dawn here, and I couldn't drag myself out of bed! We live in a heavily wooded area, so doubtful I'd see anything unless I drove to a clearing. I'll have to devise a plan for later tonight!

Kristina

Got them all on Pam,here goes,but i am behind the window.:t: :'D :'D :'D Yes i am feeling good.o:D ;)

Mary, you have got it right and keep warm and dry o:D

What varied answers here. I think it depends on what part of the country that you come from, in relation to waht you are lucky to see.

Thanks Tony, hope that lady luck with stars is on your side too. o:)

Of course there is the sleep factor too. :cat:

Still there is no harm in having another peek tonight. ;)

Too overcast again here tonight. Too much light polution in the town anyway I suspect.

Kristina

Hello Kristina.

It isn't unusual to see them here. There are other times of the year when they are common too.

I seem to see more than my fair share as I do a lot of camping and have always had habit of sitting out into the early hours. I don't know anything about astronomy though. It's just the pleasure of the open air, the sounds and smells of the countryside, and the awesome sight of a bright clear sky. I find it so relaxing I realy begrudge going to bed.
