Moths of August 2010 (2 Viewers)

A few problems lately with the bulb going out - dodgy contacts.
Trapped on Saturday night at a friend's cottage in Glen Doll:
Notables included northern spinach, nutmeg (wonder how common this is in Angus - I added it to the Fife list), gold spangle, plenty of july highflyers and dark marbled carpets. Antler was the most numerous species. Out on Driesh and Mayar on Sunday twin-spot carpets were everywhere.

Trapping here on Monday night (rained heavily) and got an impressive 33 spp. including a monstrous Old Lady (only my 2nd). Other highlights were a record number of july highflyers and the first cyclamen tortrix of the year. On the down side I may have overlooked a lunar YU - not far from Tentsmuir here.

Rob

I had another good night last night, like Rob, i too had loads of Dark M Carpets, July Highflyers and Antlers. 35 species from 165 macros, most numerous were Large YU-26 and Autumnal Rustics -21, with 4 NFM , 4-Black Rustic (pic) Heath Rustic (pic) Archer`s Dart (pic) and Cheveron.

I had a modest catch last night - unless you count the 20+ hornets. Among the moths that survived I had a new for the garden - antler. New for year included: square-spot rustic, canary-shouldered thorn, angle-shades, Pyrausta purpuralis and P aurata, and possibly Vine's rustic.

Only managed to trap twice this August. Nothing spectacular but my 4th Tree-lichen Beauty for the year, 1st Cypress Pug of the year and first ever Gold Spot were nice to find in the garden. An overdue lifer in the form of a Vine's Rustic was in the trap on the 15th.

I get 20+ Vine's Rustic each night at the moment. It seems that it is not that common for others. Perhaps I have misidentified it. What could I have confused it with? Or is it just common in SE London/Kent borders?

Hi Andy - I trap in the East Hill area of Dartford, Kent. I am currently getting up to 10 Vine's Rustics each evening.

Also of note last night were:
Small Ranunculus
Plain Wave
2 Tree-Lichen Beauties
2 Jersy Tigers

Cheers

James

Some class moths there, mate! Manchester Treble-bar?! :C Congrats!

Regarding Tree-lichen Beauty breeding, according to the CR, there is breeding going on here in Surrey. I've had four in the garden this year.

I have not trapped for almost a week now. The weather is awful. I looked through all my moth pictures from last year instead and added moths I haven't seen this year to a new list I call 'Moth List'. My total list of moths I've seen is now 250, including only three micros. Small Magpie, Mother of Pearl and one more.

A pretty good night. 211 moths of 34 species. Highlights were:

Garden Tiger
Jersey Tiger
Burnished Brass (pic) (NFY)
Rosy Rustic (pic) (NFG)
Old Lady
Antler (3)
Yellow-barred Brindle
Dark Sword Grass
