Moths of August 2010 (3 Viewers)

Already August..

Last night was great with over 200 moths of 43 species (if ID'd correctly). Min temp of 14 degrees, cloudy and very little wind brought me 4 new species. The last two need confirmation, I've uploaded them in the ID-section.
I was also sugaring again, but not anything interesting there at night, but a Comma butterfly a couple of hours ago.

An impressive haul from Kalle!

My haul last night was somewhat more modest...Black Arches, Swallowtail, Copper Underwing, Mother of Pearl, LYUndwng., LBBYUndwng., 2 Riband Wave, 2 Sep.Thorn, 5 Common Rustic, 18 Dunbar, and what I believe are 2 Tree Lichen Beauties! see attached.

Assuming I'm correct? What is TLB's status...is it increasing it's range?

yep - Tree Lichen Beauty - I've had 5 in the last 3 weeks in Dartford and 2 have been trapped by my Dad in Sidcup, SE London - I assume it's spreading it's range but surprised me when I caught my first!

An unusually quiet night in the garden last night with the only noteables being Beautiful Hook-tip, Tawny Speckled Pug and 3 Marbled Beauty. Pleased to see Dark Arches numbers dropping to just one last night!

It's interesting that TLB has been regular in my garden since at least 2006!....according to Lewington there were only 3 records prior to 1991..2 in Cheshire July 1859, and one from Hastings in 1873...then singletons in Hants/Sussex in 1991. Since then, I presume there has been a tremendous increase?...another climate change indicator I suspect....what next I wonder?

Had a good haul last night over 200 moths of 45 species,NFM were Dark Marbled Carpet, Dotted Carpet, Anomalous and from saturday Grey Mountain Carpet.

Yes, rapidly increasing its range. The first for Huntingdonshire was recorded last year, and the first for Cambridgeshire was caught a few nights ago.

Another 'modest haul last night with the UV! Thinking that If I move the trap to the end of the garden I might just get a 'different bag'. This I did!.....10 moths of 8 species! and only 1 Dunbar! Tonight I will bring out the MV and move closer to the house.

I didn't stay awake last night, but woke up at 03:10 of the rain that was pouring down. I don't think it had rained for that long because the traps were not very wet. Even though it rained a lot at least in the end this turned out to be the best night ever for me with 328 moths and 52 species! And I don't count most carpets or micros! Most numerous were:

36 Lesser Swallow Prominent
32 Dun-bar
22 Scalloped Hook-tip
21 Large Yellow Underwing
20 Swallow Prominent

4 new species, 3 Copper Underwings, Archer's Dart, Yellow Shell and The Shark. All the Copper Underwings was attracted to wine and sugar and I checked the hindwings, so I am sure of the ID.

Still getting Hawks too, two Pine and one Elephant. The Elephant was very fresh.

Last night was interesting here. I had a total of four species of prominents - a record for me:

Iron Prominent 1
Coxscomb Prominent 1
Maple Prominent 2
Swallow Prominent 1

Shame yesterday's Pale Prominent didn't make a repeat appearance

The highlight was a new species for the VC - Catoptria margaritella. Particularly suprising as I find Crambids difficult and often race through them in my bid to get to work in a morning. Thanks to Harri and Brian on the ID pages for confirming this for me.:t:

Not had much trapping time recently but I did manage to extract a small china-mark from our outdoor light before a hornet got too close for comfort.
Finally managed to photograph a silver-washed frit. yesterday.

Night of 2nd/3rd Aug - got there late (5.35am), 42 moths of 23 macro species.

First prominents of the year, and a couple more nfy

Pale Prominent 2
Straw Dot 2
Six-striped Rustic 1

Commonest species Dingy Footman with 9, no Large Yellow Underwings!

I think you sent some my way - I had 40 in the trap this morning; by far my highest nightly total here. Numbers of this species are generally much higher than last year in the garden.

Other notables were a Small Ranunculus and a really pristine Swallow Prominent.

Good counts for me were 37 Shuttle-shaped Dart, 41 Common Rustic and 20 Endotricha flammealis although the latter is a lower count than recent nights. This moth is one of the commonest micros here.

A new macro was Dog's Tooth and 2 Udea lutealis were also NFG.

Not a bad haul last night despite the cool temp,over 170 Macros of 45 species,usual characters but numbers of Magpies,Smoky Wainscots and Dark Arches all down to single figures now,first Garden Tiger for a while,5 Pinion- Streaked Snout was the most in one night,starting to get a few fresh Dark Marbled Carpets now stunning moths!

Nice! Ironically two days ago saw my first Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary on the Lizard, then we managed to randomly bump into some more at Porthgwarra yesterday.

Thats interesting, here in Surrey we got our first record of that species just a few nights ago! Caught by our very own bedfontbirder.

An interesting night last night.

My first ever Tissue, a nice red-tinted one. Also nfy were White Satin and Agriphila tristella.

I am catching hardly any Large and Lesser Yellow Underwings compared to previous years yet more LBB Yellow Underwings and Shuttle-shaped Darts than normal, and enormous numbers of Common Rustic types - 73 on Sunday and 59 last night.

Of about 100 moths and 32 species I got a couple of new last night, one that I posted in the ID forum (maybe Flounced Rustic) and Smoky Wainscot. Not a new moth, but I have never looked at the hindwing before.

 

[Surreybirder]

According to the Times it's going to be a record year for wasps. A nest the size of a car !! was found in Southampton. That puts my hornet problems in perspective.
I was pleased to get one of my favourites last night - magpie moth (not so common in Surrey as in Scotland!) and one of the largest Crambidae.

Nice pic, Dan... a species I've never seen. I must bear it in mind next time I'm in Porthgwarra.
