Pittas and Dolphins-Hushan Dam, Taiwan (1 Viewer)

I've been computer-less for a bit so have just now responded, Mark. Hope it also isn't too late, but vis-a-vis the archeological digs, sounds like we may have time to keep getting more letters sent.

I just sent mine off, with an added paragraph:

"Finally, please do not repeat the same mistakes some of us in our own countries have made by trading short-term economic gain at the expense of species extinction and permanent loss of habitat. Humans have unlimited choices about where they can make money. Plants and animals – even migratory animals – have no choice in where they must live."

I received word this morning that the Hushan Dam EPA hearing has been scheduled for Friday, 29 June 2007.

Please keep those letters coming.

At yesterday's environmental impact assessment meeting, the EPA said they will be responding before the end of July to our letter of intent to sue, but they maintain that they have no legal authority to stop the construction of Hushan Dam at this time. We are continuing to look into the possibility of filing an injunction. So I guess that pretty much nothing has changed.

Bad News

Received this, this morning - depressing to see what you're up against out there, Mark

Dear D.......

During the past two months you supported the Save the Taiwan Sousa Dolphin campaign by voicing your concern over the plight of the eastern Taiwan Strait population of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin in a letter to the Taiwan Government.

Clearly, the Taiwan Government's Council of Agriculture's response to our letters of concern doesn't address the plight of the Taiwan population of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins at all. Their letter only gives a brief outline of cetacean conservation efforts in Taiwan since 1981 and doesn't address any of the threats facing the Taiwan population of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins.

Last week, the Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD) approved plans for the development of wind farms in primarily Taiwan humpback dolphin habitat. This is a very worrying development and only serves to highlight that the Taiwan Government is not considering the plight of the humpback dolphins at all.

Please assist us once again in the campaign to save the Taiwan population of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin by sending another letter (click, or see below) to the Taiwan Government requesting that they do address the Taiwan humpback dolphin problem with utmost urgency.

Sincerely,

Mark Wilkie

The Second International Workshop on the Taiwan Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins

The Second International Symposium and Workshop on the Conservation and Research Needs of the Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins, Sousa chinensis, in the waters of western Taiwan will take place in (Lukang/Taichung) Taiwan from September 4-7, 2007. Details will be posted as soon as we receive them.

The Hushan Dam project will have a very negative impact on Taiwan's unique and extremely vulnerable population of Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins Sousa chinensis (Pink Dolphin/Chinese White Dolphin). See the Save the Taiwan Sousa Dolphin Blog for details.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the news about the Symposium and Workshop. I hope it is advertised internationally even maybe that international delegates on dolphins and marine life will attend. The more people that learn about them and the dam being built that will destroy them and their environment the better.

It is a miracle the Dolphins still survive in all that polluted water from the industrial plants nearby.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Just seen this - sorry to be a bit late!
As somewhere I would love to visit, is there something I can do to help at this late stage?
Cheers

Hi Mark,

Thanks for posting this. I hope the Workshop was a great success and makes more people aware of these rare wonderful creatures and give them more protection. The one we know as "The Survivor" has lived so long with her terrible injuries we can't let her down, we must protect them all, stop the dam and clean up the sea.

Let's hope so, Ann. One thing the workshop did do was raise local awareness.
