The type locality of Pyrrhuloxia Cardinalis sinuatus from the protologue is "Western parts of Mexico" (my emphasis).
But the subspecies list at IOC gives the nominate subspecies as eastern Mexico, and with a wetsern subspecies C. s. fulvescens in western Mexico.
Has IOC got it wrong? Should the western subspecies not be the nominate one?
Also, does anyone know the source of the English name 'Pyrrhuloxia'? Sounds like a scientific genus name coined by someone who wanted to split it off from Cardinalis.
