Medicinal Birding
Hi everyone,
I saw this grebe at Mogan Lake, Turkey on Sunday. It was very very far away and unfortunately the bird was barely visible in any photos or videos I shot. Thus all I have really is this BoC video that I shot with a lot of magnification!
The bird in question is the one on the right of the frame, next to a Great Crested Grebe.
While watching this bird I had no doubts it was a Red-necked, and I actually still don't. But the last sighting here was about 15 years ago so I thought I should consult anyways.
It was obviously bigger than a Black-necked and obviously smaller than a Great Crested. Its neck was longer and was held more upright than that of Black-necked but shorter and thicker than that of Great Crested. The cheeks were eye-catchingly silver-grey, and the neck was dark red/maroon coloured. Also of note were the longish bill and flat, black crown.
The video is very bad, I know, but I think it should give you an idea about the appearance of this bird. You can actually see most/all of the features I mentioned above.
Here's the video:

As always, thanks for your help o
