Shanghai Perambulations (1 Viewer)

Over a month since the last post here and nothing to report now - except to mention that I have started on my Sabah, Borneo Trip Report here : http://www.birdforum.net/showthread....19#post2788119

As a 'Reconnaissance Mission' it went very well ! Definitely need more time over there (to focus on specific birds) though as Jungle birding is tough, very tough, no matter whether in 'real' lowland jungle as in Kinabatangan / Sepilok or the mountain jungles of Mt Kinabalu NP and Poring. They are all dark (especially when the mist swirls around or the heavy rains come down) and a real challenge photographically (many 600mm shots were taken at 1/125 and at high ISOs !), plus narrow, dark pathways make spotting birds, before they spot you and disappear, very difficult too !

Yesterday Dev & I motored on down to the Turf Fields and Reed Beds of Nan Hui, aborting the original plan to meet up with Mark (McMadd) and Anders on Xiao Yang Shan following texts from Mark (dead, nothing, slow, nowt !) informing us how poor the birding was there - surprising and disappointing considering Mike in HK has already had Asian Paradise Flycatchers (and we were to get a few later that day over in the Magic Car Park).

Yet another scorching day (hasn't every day over the past 2 months in Shanghai been like that ?) in the 35-38C bracket and so copious quantities of water was consumed - in fact my coffee stayed hot in the car from 05.45 through to 15.00 when I polished it off !

Note the Oriental Reed Warblers have raised their broods (and no doubt many cuckoos too) and have left - the reedbeds were relatively quiet without them !

Despite the disappointment of XYS and the heat (and a violent, very heavy, rain-storm that curtailed our birding at 15.00) it turned out to be a real Red Letter Day for me, and wonderful birding to note Mark's sad departure from this fair city for the frozen tundra of Finland (oh OK, maybe just a little hyperbole there). Lifers for me and for Dev too (Anders I'm not sure but I know he loved the view) !

We want pictures!

Add Curlew Sandpiper, Great Egret, Bar-tailed Godwit, Little Grebe, Common Redshank, Yellow Wagtail (c.500+ at turf fields and constant stream overhead all morning at Nanhui W), Long-toed & Red-necked Stint (10:1 ratio), PG Plover were nearer 50-60 IMO...an excellent wader day!

McM (still here for another few hours!)

Ha ha - beat me to it Mark. Here they are (now added to the original post above and here below). Thanks for the birds I was missing !

Superb shots of the Dowitchers!

68spp. is a fine score for August, but not altogther surprising as this is the peak season for wader passage.

Cheers
Mike

You are the man for the "Witch"craft. Great pics.

From my end all the Great Knots were overexposed n the Ruddy Turnstone was underexposed:C I wil settle with the Sanderlings for now

Nice one on the Dowitchers! I believe quality is the word. I have about 100 Black-tailed Gulls like look quite similar in my area at the moment. Feathers all over the mudflats as they molt. Wonder how they get any lift with that type of gear?!

Thank you Dev. A fine shot of the Sanderling it is though - I know I don't have better.

Thank you Tom ! Good to hear about your BT Gulls looking the same, that would explain the scruffiness.

A few more shots from Sunday :-
