I have just been going through my pictures from a recent trip to the South Atlantic and have a very clear shot of a colour ringed Wandering Albatross, and the ring is readable. Anybody have an idea who or where I can report this information to and get some more info on the bird.

Hi Colin,

Try:

Prof. J.P. Croxall and Dr. A.G. Wood, British Antartic Survey, High Cross, Madingley Road, Cambridge, CB3 OET, United Kingdom.

tel.: +44-(0)12.23-221.587.

e-mail: [email protected]

Even if your bird is not one of theirs, they might be able to give you a lead.

Great find!

Albatross information

http://www.birdforum.net/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/170665/ppuser/8821

The following information has been kindly supplied by Andy G. Wood of the British Antarctic Survey:

'I have checked our database and the only possible bird with a blue darvic
band with the numbers 03 at the end is 503. U503 (U=blue) was fledged
from Bird Island, South Georgia (54'S, 38'W) in late 2004, and the plumage
of the bird that you photgraphed also suggests that this is the same bird.

U503 carries metal band number 4000621 on the other leg. As I said, it
was fledged in 2004 from our study area at Bird Island. It first emerged
as an egg on the 16th December 2003 (with a weight of 487g); hatched on
the 4th March 2004; weighed 12.3kg at 260 days old and fledged on the 5th
December 2004. It's parents first paired in 1998, the female being a 1989
bird and the male a 1976 bird. This pairing has produced 5 successful
chicks in the last 9 years, and the male is back again at Bird Island as
of the 12th December 2007.'

Thanks for sharing your information.

Its great isn't it to find out about a particular bird and its parents is an added bonus!
