Tice's Meadow and Tongham GP, Surrey (6 Viewers)

Bloody hell what an evening that was! Stunning adult winter plumaged Spotted Redshank and Juv Black Tern to add to the already big numbers of waders at Tice's or is it Titchwell?!?! 2 Garganey present again as well. Yellow Wagtail nice to see too.

Another amazing couple of hours last night. A site record of 10 Ruff and FIVE Garganey!! 5 Blackwits, Greenshank and numerous Green and Common Sandpipers. At least 8 Swift and quite a few Hirundines still present. Eclipse male Wigeon too. What next? I can feel a proper Mega on its way:) On a bad note can you all keep your eyes peeled for a young black and white Collie with a 'loud' owner. The dog chased the doe and 2 fawns round the meadow last Saturday and also nearly knocked 2 female birders over! The police have been informed and are interested in speaking to the owner.

Dave,

the Collie did the same a couple of weeks ago and then appeared to attack another dog in the scrub as the loud lady could be heard howling and shouting at another dog owner. Will keep a look out.

A great day yesterday. Who needs the East Bank at Cley when you have the mound at Tice's producing such views? 5 Garganey - I have never, apart from in The Gambia, seen 5 together.

See you in the morning! Bring it on.

What a cracking weekend. The wader fest included 9 Ruff, upwards of 6 Blackwits, several Green Sandpipers, a couple of Common Sandpipers, 1 Ringed Plover, 1 Snipe and 1 Greenshank. The 5 Garganey remaned, as did the drake Wigeon and vismig included several Yellow Wagtails, 2 Tree Pipits and several Red Kites. The Kites were joined by another 7 raptor species over the weekend.

New birders are discovering the site daily and it is great to see.

For todays records 4 Curlew, Sandpiper Black- Tailed, Godwit, 9 Ruff ,Gargany,2 Dunlin , 3 Hobby , Peregrine and Windchat. Great to see so many enjoying Tices .900 Common Lizards releast by Jonty Denton.

It was good to meet a few of you guys on the mound on Saturday morning. Great birds and great company. Jaz my black lab had a good run on the way back the car so he finally stopped whining. Sadly I didn't get back and on Sunday but will definitely be spending more time on the mound, i might even have to change my name to Berks&Surrey watcher.

Thanks again for the warm welcome guys.

So glad you enjoyed and thanks for your comments . Look forward to seeing you again. The Tices Crew.

The 4 Curlew Sands were still present this morning, one of which is a nice adult moulting from sp to wp, on the meadow. The five Garganey are also still on site, only 1 Blackwit remains, but I counted 10 Ruff although counting was difficult given the mobility of the birds. Also noted were 1 Greenshank, & at least 4 Green Sandpipers, no sign of yesterday's Whinchat however.

John.

The Wader Fest continues; 4 Curlew Sandpipers, 1 Wood Sandpiper and 2 Avocets this morning. What next?

Great to bump into last weekend and look forward to seeing you again. This wekend promises to be a cracker.

What a cracking three days with wader numbers reducing but the addition of 2 Avocets on Friday. By yesterday the following were still present and a large number of birders (including the Guildford RSPB Group) had seen them from the mound:

1 Curlew Sandpiper
1 Wood Sandpiper
1 Greenshank
4 or 5 Ruff
6 Green Sandpiper
1 Common Sandpiper
2 Garganey

Passage Yellow Wagtails over on Sunday morning and a very obliging Kingfisher on Saturday. Other wildlife sightings included 1 Grass Snake, several Common Lizards, 2 Wasp Spiders, 1 Four Spot Orb Weaver (spider) and a Roesel's Bush Cricket.

Of note today Red Kite, Hobby, Ruff with Wood, Green and Common Sandpiper, Greenshank, Snipe ,Garganey. Great to see Sean and Dave Smith with how we can progress on Sunday . Jonty Denton has now relocated over a 1000 Common Lizards into Tices you can see them every where . Saturday see s the September Volunteer Work Party clearing Willow ect .Do come along and support. Tea wagon on site to. Meet Pea Bridge or the Mound 10 am this Sat 13th.

It's all kicking off. Juvenile Pectoral Sandpiper found last night; the bird was flushed along with everything else by an RC Plane. It has now returned this morning and has been inview along with a Little Stint and a Sanderling. The Wood Sandpiper is still present.

The Pec Sand is still around along with the Wood Sand and the Little Stint. Loads of birders have connected including Lee Evans who commented favourably on twitter about the site and even called it a mecca. He reported 4 Garganey although only 2 have been reported recently. What next chaps?

No sign of the Pec Sand late afternoon yesterday but there had been reports of upwards of 2 Wood Sandpipers. The Little Stint occasionally showed well but the star bird for me was the Sandwich Tern which spent most of the hour I had there on the fence posts in front of the mound. 4 Garganey were again reported on birdguides.

This morning was my first chance to visit Tice's since all the good birds appeared. Fantastic habitat - has to be the best wetland area in the Hants/Surrey Border area ever - although it appears to be drying up fast. Rain needed!

Saw Pec, Little Stint, Greenshank, Wood Sand (only one found), Ringed Plover (2 juvs), Common Sand, Green Sand, at least 4 Snipe, at least 32 Shoveler (prob quite a few more), 2 Pintail, juveile Garganey, Hobby. Quite a haul!

John

Of note today Pectoral Sandpiper still about with Little Stint Greenshank + all the others. Thanks to all the volunteers Sat clearing willow. Yes Jim will be burning. Jonty Denton releasing Slow Worm Grass Snake today. Great to see so many enjoying Tices Meadow. Not only for the great birds we are getting also Wasp Spider and Lizards ect.

Yesterday Mike and Val and myself got Curlew flying over. Today the Pec Sandpiper with Little Stint and Garganey still about and lots more with Windchat in the hedge row. Cliff Watts and i took Peter from Farnham Herald around to show him the site today and report.
