Upton Warren (10 Viewers)

It may come as a surprise to some but the Baird's Sandpiper represented a 20+ year wait for Upton Warren to add to the Worcestershire County List, with Westwood Pool and Grimley being responsible for most of the recent additions. By my reckoning Upton's contributions are as follows:

9th September 2016 - Baird's Sandpiper
26th August 1996 - Laughing Gull
1st May 1992 - Red-rumped Swallow
15th August 1988 - Least Sandpiper
7th November 1987 - Rustic Bunting
8th October 1986 - Yellow-browed Warbler
14th September 1985 - Wilson's Phalarope
11th May 1985 - Savi's Warbler
5th May 1982 - Purple Heron
6th May 1973 - Alpine Swift
29th July 1971 - Caspian Tern
6th March 1968 - Blue-winged Teal
7th October 1967 - Richard's Pipit

Had the American Wigeon from the 1970s been accepted as a wild bird it too would be added to the list; I am still uncertain about the circumstances of the sighting and why it was deemed to be Category D.

I don't know if anyone (Brian?) has a list of all new Worcestershire additions for say the last 50 years?

I have had a go at this exercise, covering all additions over the last 80 years. I don't expect it to be perfect and more than happy for others to contribute to the timeline:

I have not been able to trace the first records of Bearded Tit, Iceland Gull and Glaucous Gull but all are believed to be in the 1960s.

Would be great if the Baird's Sand was the vanguard of a cluster of County firsts as per the late 1960s / early 1970s and again in the mid and late 1980s - Lesser Yellowlegs and Bonaparte's Gull anyone?

Pallas's Warbler?

Brian used to have dates of occurrence of rarities/scarcities on Worcs Birding, something I think inherited when he became county recorder and carried on with. It may still be on the site, but I don't think so. That may have the first dates of the three species above if we haven't had too many in Worcs, though it may not have the site.

I cant see anything of this ilk currently on Worcester Birding - Brian is currently away so cant follow up what info he may have.

PS Highlighting corrected

At least it's not just me being technologically challenged then! Impressive piece of work though, thought you'd be short of time, what with trying to amass enough brownie points for the rest of the autumn and all that 😃

Well done to the Tuesday crew. Today is the culmination of all the sweat and toil that you given in the last 2 weeks. No coincidence Great White egret. 2 x little egret. 9 Blackwits. Wouldn't have happened without you..take a bowB :)

On this subject due to continued work at the Flashes ...next Tuesday etc. There will not be a Tuesday work party on 20th September.

Thanks John - and let me add my thanks to you for all the hard work and excellent publicity you have given the reserve this week.

Roger

Baird's still present last thing, flying and calling a lot. Ruff Avocet, 2 Green Sands, 10 Curlew, 3 Snipe and 1st W Common Gull also at Flashes. Both egrets (I only saw one Little) disappeared from view just after my tweet earlier, probably only out of sight though. Three Snipe at Moors too.
