At FLASHES
per Dave J
Avocet broods down to 3:2 . The 3 are the oldest chicks originally 4. Yesterday the 4 broods totalling 11 chicks are now down to 5 . This means we have lost 3 poss 4 broods. Of the 12 chicks hatched we have now lost 7. Whether this is lack of feeding areas, FOX predation or a combination of the two we don't know.
The 3 LRP chicks are still alive ..fingers crossed.
Only migrant is a common sand.
Bob Williams had a cuckoo calling from the Hen Brook in front of cuckoo hide this evening 8pmish.

Arrived at 5.10am wasn't raining at first but once it started at 5.30 it didn't stop.
From the Avocet hide it very apparent that the FOX is having an affect on the BHG colony. All the mainland breeding birds and those on islands in the shallows have been decimated. The Avocet chicks too are being affected with Only 4 !! of the 12 hatched surviving . The sitting numbers are also decreasing. With all this negativity it was pleasing to see all 3 LRP chicks.
Migrants were non existent initially but then a common sand arrived . Just when I was getting a bit disillusioned after hearing that birds were turning up at Belvide a spanking summer plumaged male TURNSTONE dropped in the saucer at 8.45 am. It performed well for the rest of my stay. A common tern and a couple of SWALLOW moved through and later 6 commic terns flew high over head.. Alan H saw them drop in briefly at the Moors they were 2 Arctic and 4 common terns. A group of 10 swift also appeared over the ER.
Count Flashes:
Shoveler pr. Gadwall 3 males. Shelduck 6. Tufted 12.
Avocet 25 +3:1. LRP 5+3ch. Oystercatcher 2. Lapwing 5. Common sand. TURNSTONE.
Common Tern 5. ARCTIC TERN 2.
Swift 10. Swallow 5.
Cetti's w.

The excellent conditions for some late passage at present are predicted to carry on until Wednesday lunchtime with a heady mix of winds varying from North East to Easterly, rising temperatures, good cloud cover and drizzle with occasional thunderstorms. I feel confident that Turnstone won't be the last decent bird and fancy something a little more exotic before the Bank Holiday is out.

interesting 2 hours at the flashes about 17.00 to 19.00.
some better pics.
