On my way down to the Flashes I picked up the Scaup on the Sailing Pool with a small number of Tufteds, 8 GCG was a good total for the time of year plus one Little Grebe. Nothing much to add to John's Flashes sightings earlier, Lapwing 275+ about the only one. The gull roost took a long time to build up, with the result that I only located one YL Gull amongst about 800 large gulls - c.400 each of Herring & LBB although more were coming in as I left. BHGs numbered about 1,000.
Scaup was back on the Moors per Craig at about 5.15.

Thanks Bob and Martin.
Can I send the pics to Dave H. He will send them off to the journalist. cheers. Has any one got any pics of very small chick . Then we'll have all ages :t:john

Sorry John I misread your post re: Can I send pics to Dave H? I read it as I will send pics. 8-P I would have replied sooner. Yep no probs. :t:

Flashes - Yellow-legged Gull 2 ads. 2x 1st w common gulls. 300+ starling circling at dusk.

just got back from a weekend away, Noticed a interesting practice done by the RSPB it looked like the Teal and Snipe enjoyed the new islands made from the cut reeds also the volunteers there said "they were also very good for Insects too".Maybe the WWT could look at this practice for its places.

Interesting. On our Tuesday work party. when we cut sny vegetation we put it into the water where it forms floating islands. They are utilised by birds to loaf on and invertebrates feed on the vegetation when the islands 'break down' increasing the food source for birds.

Tomorrow at the Moors

The work party will be working in the SW marsh..cutting back reed mace so we can see into the area from the West hide.
Also cutting in front of the North Moors screens .

October finished with a reasonable haul of 95 species; most obvious omissions were Yellowhammer and House Sparrow.

Potential additions in November to the year list include Bittern, Goldeneye, Woodcock, Brambling, Mealy Redpoll and Waxwing.

Moors work party

We had another very productive (i.e. destructive) session: last week's debris at Amy's Marsh was burnt, the board walk behind the West hide was cleaned and the surrounds cleared; the reed-mace and willows to the right of the hide were cleared and burnt to give a good view of the South-West Marsh and any grazing widgeon, and the reed was cut back in front of the viewing screens on the North Moors.

We numbered 13: Bob O, Bob P, Charles, Ian, Janette (taking time off from finding rare birds), Jim, Keith, Leslie (a welcome newcomer from the roving volunteers), Paul, Ray, Roger, Terry and me.

We didn't have much time for birding but Paul almost trod on a Jack Snipe.

Delicious cakes were supplied by Janette, Jim and Claire (Mrs Muntjac). In fact the cakes were so numerous that we required out of county visitors to help us out.

I am not very hopeful but should anyone find a silver-coloured hearing aid in one of the worked areas would they give it to one of the wardens so that I can be reunited with it?

Today's work party

Some photos of the team hard at it!

Thanks to all the crew today looks like a great effort, unforseen circumstances meant I couldn't be there today....and to be honest I don't think you need me anymore 8-P...but I will be back . Sounds like the cakes were worth coming for ..oh well maybe another feast on another Tuesday :t:.
Thanks to Peter abs Ian for posting the work carried out :t:

Peter E's post of the day's work party sums it all up very well. It was an enjoyable and productive session. Added are a couple of shots showing the North Moors viewing screens before and after the work. When I tweeted these earlier in the day, I had a tweet from Tracey Pye to say she saw a Cetti's warbler in the reeds there this afternoon.

Moors, pm

Also quite quiet - water rail called but didn't show. Kingfisher flew past. Pair of Cetti's chased each other in the approach to west hide.

East hide:

1. Distant Scaup.
2. Solitary curlew.
3. Green Sandpiper.
