Hi,
I am planning on visiting The North-east USA this autumn, probably around mid-october to early november, or something like that, and was wondering what i might stand a good chance of seeing in terms of birds and other wildlife. I will definetly be visiting New york, and have been looking at places like central park and jamaica bay wildlife refuge. and am looking at Shenendoajh national park in virginia aswell.
So i was wondering if anybody could tell me what sorts of birds and other animals i can see in these places in mid october/ early november? (including the really common stuff, as ive never been to this part of the world before)
or any other really great places in the north-east at that time of year?
Any help will be much appreciated.
Cheers.

I'd recommend getting familiar with eBird which will give you a good idea which species are around any location in the US during a particular data range. Here are two example pages for NY Central Park and Shenandoah National Park.

You start to miss the fall Warbler migration in late October, but you may pick up some farther south (Shenandoah NP for example).

For the NYC are, this site:
http://nycbirdreport.com/index.html
provides a daily summary of species seen in the various areas of the city. It was compiled as a labor of love by Mike Freeman for the years 2004-2007 and should give you a good sense of what to expect where.
For the Shenandoah National Park, try this site:
http://www.nps.gov/shen/index.htm
It gives a pretty good overview of the park and of the wildlife. The local Dept of Game and Fisheries
http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/ and the Virginia Audubon Society http://web4.audubon.org/bird/iba/virginia/ are also good starting points for planning your trip.
Do note that Cape May Bird Observatory is between NYC and Virginia and is well worth a visit. They have a fall birding festival Oct 28-30, http://www.birdcapemay.org/autumn.shtml
Welcome to New York and the USA. Hope you have a wonderful visit.
