Which 10x42 binoculars are you using the most? (2 Viewers)

I would normally agree with that, and it's why I've always favoured 8's...
But the dense and solid Meostars enable a very stable view 👍
I have the same experience with my Leica Duovid at 12x. I can hold it steadier than my Habicht 10x40 and Swift 10x50. I think it's because of the density in combination with being heavier.

Oh, and i don't own a 10x42. Only 10x25, 10x40 and 10x50
Should i get one?

Interesting posts. I was using my only 10x binocular yesterday for garden birding from the back window (with supported elbows). It doesn't get much use, for the same shaky hold reasons already mentioned by other posters, but with a steadied hold I have no complaints at all about my 10x42 Swarovski SLC WB, that is the most recent and final version — bought new in 2020.

A classic, very well behaved glass with (for me) a nice grip, small format — even shorter and lighter than the 8x version, very low glare propensity, and a useable image right across the field without being flat field. Contrast and resolution are great and most importantly these binoculars seem to bring out the best behaviour from my eyes!

Unlike more front-line birders I especially like the slow focus speed as it allows me to get exact focus more easily.

The colours are warm, quite Ultravid Leica-esque but to me a little yellower rather than redder.

The 8x is also very fine indeed, holding its own well against EL 8.5, which I also happen to like for its different characteristics.

Thank you for posting and I hope this response is helpful. I have come to appreciate the 8 and 10 SLCs more and more and on a small cosmetic point they seem to look much better in real life than in any photos I have seen.

I believe nowadays these items are made by a sub-division of Swarovski and marketed as Kahles Helia, offered in a different colour, i.e. not in Swarovski strip.

I hope Habicht 10x40 could be considered in the 10x42 category. It is my current 10x bins and dreaming to upgrade into something better. However, still have no idea to which one I should go for 😊
I like the ergonomics of Habichts and surprisingly I can handhold it steady enough. However, thinking of better optical quality. I think 10x suits me the best because it satisfies me with the extra details I could see.

Especially if you have one with modern coatings there isn't anything that much better optically. You may spend more to get something "more" waterproof with sharper edges and better glare control but in terms of image brightness/color, center sharpness, and contrast, the Habichts are first rate.

As for what I use myself just got my SLC WB back from swarovski and adore them. It's not so much that there is any one thing they are better than any other binocular at but more that they (to me) lack any serious flaws.

Thank you @has530 I think you made my mind clear. I like the ergonomics of the Habichts and the only problems I am having with them are glare and flare. These are 2022 made and I am getting used to them. However, my mind always say there are some better ones out there 😀 But as you said I would not get much for more money 😊

Hi,

that is an easy choice... I only have an SE in 10x42... and it is not very often used - only when I am sure that I will be observing at distance beforehand...

I don't like 10x so I rarely use them with one exception--I've been using Nikon 10x25 Stabilized as my bicycling bin for the past couple years. I don't like it very much but it does the job.

My 10x42 had 10mm shaved off and is actually a 10x32 UVHD+ that I haven't been able to compare to much else in a 10x other than once, and in that case, the x32 was much brighter and sharper than the x40.

In order of frequency for 10x binoculars:
  • Zeiss Victory SF 10x42 - simply spectacular as a all-around birding glass
  • Maven 10x50 - incredible design (handles more like a 42mm) and I really enjoy using them
  • Zeiss Victory FL 10x56 - when viewing waterfowl and waders on bright, sunny days - it is a glare crusher
  • Swarovski SLC 10x56 - exceptionally crisp and bright, great for tripod use - find that I use them more than my 10x42 SLC for birding, but often use my 42mm SLCs for other applications

Had some Canon 10x42 is which were good but now own some Leica Nocotivid 10x42's. They are so immersive it's amazing and the build quality and feel is second to none.
