Which binocular(s) did you use today? (3 Viewers)

The Royal Marines are still here in Rotterdam, they get younger every year….
Two of my grandsons are Royal Marine Commando’s. I cannot keep up with them now (from a physical and liquid refreshment perspective!) but they are a touching and proud reminder of what a fantastic life I did have amongst the very best of people.

The Corps, NL and UK, lives on and is getting younger every year!

Qua Patet Orbis…….Zo Wijd de Wereld Strekt

Per Mare, Per Terram………..By Sea, By Land

Proud grandfather! What kind of binoculars they use?

They use IR night vision bino’s which cost more than my military pension…… x 100!

They literally turn night to day and whilst I know the make I would have to kill you if I told you!

Their own personal bino’s are my old Geco’s (GPO) which have been superb.

Possibly true but not as dirty as the reaction I got in the Hofbräuhaus München when I uttered those immortal words,

“ Bitte ein Bit “

😁
I am not saying the Bavarians brew good beer - they truly don't - but nobody apart from maybe tourists and/or Pälzer drinks Bitburger. In Germany, as in many countries, beer gets better as you go north. Flens, Becks, etc are great. The nfurther you travel southwards after the Weisswurstgrenze, which is on a line through Frankfurt/Main, the worse the beers get, like Rothaus from near Waldshut, Lasser (Wasserlasser) from Stuttgart, and Schlossquell (Schlossqual) from Heidelberg. And in Bavaria, where beer is taxed on a lower schedule because it is considered to be a basic foodstuff like bread, I have never and will never drink beer. In the South they also have this disgusting Kristallweizen. Any beer you have to put a slice of lemon into to cover the taste is questionable at least. Dark wheat beer is worthy a try though.
In the middle, Kölsch and Alt, and Köstritzer in the East are all very good beers.
One notable exclusion to the north-south rule is Eichbaum in Mannheim, where it has the nickname Friedhofsbier ... the brewery is right next to the main cemetery and the beer is rumored to be brewed with Leichenwasser. Despite that, or maybe just in spite, it is a pretty good beer.

Everyone else's mileage will invariably vary.

Truly subjective!

Having been fortunate enough to have been stationed in Germany it is remarkable how the regions beer differ. Personally, as a resident of Dusseldorf for a year or two, nothing quite touched the taste buds as a lovely Alt from the specialist breweries in the Altstadt. Especially with a gorgeous roast pork and crackling dinner. I digress.

Nothing touches Belgian beer in my view, and the Trappist beers of Belgium (and the one or two that are brewed over the border in the Netherlands) are just superb.

I have tasted American beer in some micro breweries in CONUS and been impressed, but the vast majority remind me of making love on a flat bottomed boat.......

'feckin near water'.:p

Completely agree on the Belgian brews. They even manage to make nice and good beers from weird stuff like raspberries. And then those cool beers made with naturally occuring yeasts, the Lambic beers.
Used to enjoy Gatzweilers from Düsseldorf.
Nice beers in the UK as well. Gales Ales, John Smith's, Tetley's, Boddington's, Sam Smith's to name but a few.
And back home I am a PBR man. Yes, you and others may now stick me in a pigeonhole. I don't care. Bud Light Platinum is also good. Also Mickey's, when I was still partaking in stronger beverages. If that disqualifies me from passing comment on beer - so be it.

What? Bitburger is the second largest Pils brewery in Germany. There aren't that many tourists and "Pälzer" don't exist - at least not in the German language. Do you mean people from the "Pfalz" perhaps? I don't see why they would drink Bit; they're known to be wine drinkers.

Tourists drink Beck's and Bud, don't they? :-J

I am from the Eifel by the way. Home of Bitburger. And I drink fine malts and red wine. :)

That was my dirty look.

Have to say that I very much enjoyed Bitburger and even had a 'Bitte ein Bit!' transfer on my dark green 16v Golf GTi.

Great brewery tours too and a visit to either Bitburg AB or Spangdahlem AB invariably ended up sampling one....... or ten Bit's.

Living in Pirmassens meant a wonderful choice of wines from the Pfalz but my favourite was a little south towards France, a smashing Weingut in Bad Bergzabern run by the Hitziger family who very conveniently allowed motorhomes to stay overnight or longer on their stellplatze. We usually stayed longer.

The Eifel is one of our favourite places, fantastic military history and superb touring country.

I went for a little walk earlier with my Minolta Activa 10x42D WP. I bought the binoculars new 23 or 24 years ago for a lot of money and they are still one of my most frequently used 10x42 binoculars. These binoculars are really good!

Hello Pat,

And "Gruss Got," to our Austrian, Bavarian and some Swiss readers.\\
"Abends Bit Mogens Fit*," If I recall correctly from my visit to the Rhineland.

Happy bird watching,
Arthur

*Evening Bitburger, morning fit.
