Young Birders Yearlist Challenge (5 Viewers)

Hey guys,

Just got back from a weekend's birding in the Lothian area with BF member Mark Grubb. Visited four places on Sunday (Linlithgow Loch, Mussleburgh Lagoons, Barns Ness and Aberlady Bay), and saw some quality birds. It started with the long-staying Smew at Linlithgow, a beautiful redhead very close to us (which I managed to get pics of). Then we headed to Mussleburgh Lagoons, where there was a winter plumage Slavonian Grebe, and after this to Barns Ness where we were in search of the Baird's Sand and a Water Pipit also reported in the area. Unfortunately, the Baird's Sand wasn't present, but we managed to see the Water Pipit, which was a lifer for me. We spent the afternoon in Aberlady Bay, where I saw my first ever (yes it was embaressing before I saw them!) Short-eared Owls, with two showing absolutely superbly in the evening light as they quartered the dunes. Anyway, my year list is now on 104, which I'm well chuffed with. I wasn't expecting to get over 100 within a month!

Only managed to add another 2 in the form of great spotted and green woodpecker recently. Don't know how it's taken me so long to see great spotted as they're usually fairly regular flyovers for my house! May take a trip to a local reserve this coming weekend if I'm not too busy.
On 56 now

105...a couple of nice redheaded birds today for the year.

4 redhead Smew (1stw drake and 4 female) on River Ribble in Grimsargh and female Blackcap was eating suet on my bird table when I got home :)

hi my name is Adin Vella im from Gozo, Malta

my year list so far is 18 species Red throated pipit being best find so far :)

I'm at 12 so far, quite miserable I know but my parents don't give a damn about birds and don't tend to take me birding, plus I live in the most populated town in Malta so I can't get to anywhere 'wild' to do some birding easily.

Just if you want to know the birds are : Spanish Sparrow, Robin, Chiffchaff, chaffinch, starling, black redstart, white wagtail, sardinian warbler, zitting cisticola, moorhen, black-headed gull and sandwhich tern.

you've had a great year so far robert! some of those birds on your current list for january would get half the birders in lancashire twitching them if they turned up here!

Cheers Zac, I'm really pleased with my start to the year however I probably should be putting more effort into my coarse work.

p.s. Tawny Owl at College takes me to 130.

Fair enough, Golden Pheasants aren't that common in the UK however as Jonny said in my area they are. I have three different sites for them and there normally pretty easy to see.

Also I'm now on 135 ~ Merlin, Black-throated Thrush, Dipper, Snow Bunt and Lapland.
