Mallorca 2015 (2 Viewers)

Magnificent pictures, Martin! On my next trip to Mallorca I’ll schedule for a trip to Cabrera, too!

Lars

Hi
I believe these trips are a new initiative, not the normal crossing to Cabrera. Mike may be better able to confirm this.
I've now had two trips to Cabrera but never by the usual 'tourist' route, only with the Parc staff in their boat as I was staying on the island for a few days to do some mothing. We certainly saw Shearwaters, etc., on the journey but they were more distant than these specialised trips. That said, Cabrera would always be worth a visit - but it can be a rough crossing!
Martin

I don't know much more Martin, except that I am going this Saturday! I can let you know more afterwards. Cabrera is always worth a visit with many major rarities being discovered every year, especially in spring, and those are found by the relatively few birders who go, goodness knows what is being missed, Mike

Tomorrow I've to head for home:-C This morning I brought back the car and afterwards walked to Boquer Valley. There I had a pair of Blue Rock Thrush at the entrance and a nice view on a singing Linnet. Also some ravens at the ridges and a Booted Eagle. Definitely too many people around. On my way back to the Hotel I took a look at La Gola. A Kingfisher was hunting from a perch. On the wavebrakers I had about 10 Sandwich Terns, an Audouin's Gull, a handful of Shags and Cormorants and two Yellow-legged Gulls.
Yesterday I visited Ternelles Valley. A wonderful Place! Lovely and quiet. I had got a permit and when I approached to the gate, the guard soon called me by name when he saw me coming. Best bird in the Valley was definitely the Black Vulture, which was flying over me several times. Potentially they have a nest in that area.
So this was my last report this time on Mallorca. I had a great time and hope to come back soon. By the way: At home I post my sightings at ornitho.de . It's an important instrument for environment protection and very useful for birding. I've seen that a ornitho.cat for Catalunya also exists. But the Balears are not included. Does anyone know why?

Very warm weather at the moment so hardly any migration which is a shame because there are birders located at major watchpoints. I was at Far de Capdepera but all the shearwaters were sitting on the sea, no movement at all. A bit of action at the tower Albercutx this morning with a couple of migrant Booted eagles and a few Yellow wagtails and a Water pipit at the sewage works. Due to get cold and rainy tomorrow, my first pelagic on Sunday, typical! Mike

Just back from my first boat trip around Cabrera and what a brilliant day it was with Scopoli's shearwaters that I could almost touch, gulls galore, Balearic shearwaters, one Yelkouan shearwater, about four Great skuas and a few Dolphins.
Any visiting birders who want to go on one of these trips I can put you in touch. Also, it may be possible in the future for those visitors without transport, to catch a coach from Pollença on a round trip for the day. Mike

Alpine accentors now being seen from the tower at Albercutx, I know a few British birders have dipped at this site but they are there, honest! Mike

A few Red-rumped swallows in today together with Barn swallow. These were at Can Guidet, a small reservoir near the airport which is neglected by visitors but it is well worth a quick visit especially for huge numbers of Black-necked grebe and Little grebe in the right months. Mike

Hi Mike
Glad you had a good time. If the photos on the Forum are anything to go by it would be well worth a trip 'down South'.
I'm still trying to organise a Spring(ish) trip given that my late March to mid April one fell through for various reasons.
Might try for mid May.
Best wishes
Martin

Mid May would be great Martin, still lots happening and yet not too hot. The Central Plain is usually very good at that time with lots of hunting falcons. There will hopefully be a boat trip in May too. Mike

Following three days of cold wind and rain, a new weather front has arrived along with many migrant birds, lots of House martins and Swallows and I believe that two Little crakes at Maristany (Tucan Marsh) have been seen. This little site is underwatched, as I said earlier in the year, but with some more attention now it has turned up two big rarities this year, Greater scaup and now the crakes.

Thanks Alan,

Thank you for the information, great report and photographs from Majorca, we are going early May.

You have a first class website.

best regards

Merlin

Three fleeting views of the Little crake at Maristany this morning, also 2 Willow warblers and the first Reed warbler. Apparently there is a male and a female Little crake sharing the same small clump of reeds so I hope they stay for visiting birders to connect with. Also a Common buzzard over Pollenca earlier. Mike

Lars, sorry, I seemed to ignore your last two posts! Thank you for your observations and congratulations on seeing the Alpine accentors. Purple swamp hen seem to be spreading which is good news. Glad you are coming back soon. Mike

Many thanks Merlin (great name!). Hope you have a great time and see many birds. I will definitely return in a future Spring...maybe slightly later.

Cheers Alan

Very windy today with only one possible Common buzzard and a few Alpine swift. Red-rumped swallow at Can Guidet. A quick visit to Salobrar de Campos produced nothing unusual but it's always a great place to go with Osprey, Red kite, Booted eagle, many Marsh harrier, Kestrel, Ruff, Greenshank, Redshank, Kentish plover, hundreds of Avocet and Shelduck, good company and no doubt a few more goodies hiding from the wind. Mike
