Thank you to everyone that has commented about my photo of a Merlin. For your further interest, this bird was hovering like a Kestrel just outside my lounge window. I managed to get the photo as it sat on the hedge and then began a frantic look through the reference books to find out what is was. It is the first and only time I have seen a Merlin and it is not a resident in this neighbourhood! (I haven't seen it since). I was also surprised at how tiny it was.
