I have a question about the age of a 10x42 SE that I bought this fall. It's serial # is 0039xx. Anyone have any idea what the approximate production year would be.

Thanks

Thanks for the response!

My Nikon SE 8x32 has serial number 504213 (november 2002), and SE 10x42 is 003926-4997 (july 2003).
Regards, from italian Alps.

Interesting serial # for the post you referenced above for the 10x42 SE. Mine has a total of 6 numbers (0039xx) with no numbers after a -. Wonder what the (4) numbers are for in the post referenced above. Maybe they are from the box, and not on the binoculars themselves. I do not have a box for mine, and I have only seen a total of (6) numbers on the SE binoculars themselves.

My 10x42s are 0015xx. Bought in 2004 when my dealer decided to offer them to me for a very nice price. Apparently he'd had them "for years" and didn't see a chance of selling them at the normal price.

Indeed, he might have had them for about seven years. The 000xxxx 10x42 SE was introduced in 1995, so the 001 was the second batch, probably made within two years of the first if they followed the same timeline I have for the 8x32 models.

I tried Steve's (mooreorless) 002xxx 10x42 SE, and I had a 050xxx 10x42 SE (10x SE numbering went from 000xxxx to 008xxx, then jumped to 050xxx when Nikon introduced EcoGlass to the SE line). Noticeably better contrast in the 050 and a bit more color saturation than the 002 model.

Thank you for all the responses. I knew I would get some answers to my ? here; it is appreciated! This gives me a better idea of when they were made.

As far as the optical quality of these, I am very impressed. And these are one of the few 10x that I can hand hold and not feel like it is handicapping the optics. Not as steady as 8x; but not bad. I got these for using on a tripod for distance viewing, with my spotting scope. For everyday carry and hand holding, I plan on mostly using 8x.

Yes, Stephen, the last four digits are shown only on the packaging and not on the body of the instrument.
Best regards and good visions with the magnificent Superior Execulite!
Alessandro.
