Looks great Des :t:, was the soil being dumped in the old hedge line. If so presumably for hedge regeneration.
What do you think.,

Yes. Inside the hedge towards the southern end of the west track. It's piled up high, so I'm not sure about hedge regeneration.

Hi everyone!

I have now got to Portsmouth and would like you to say what you think these are. At first I thought they were red-necked grebes but I'm not sure. The bills don't have any yellow base that I can discern.

These would be a just reward for a five mile walk along the seawall around Thorney island to get to Pilsey island RSPB reserve.

I am now on 125 for the year.:t: (maybe 126 what do you think?)

Hope everything is going well at the Warren.

all the best to the best.

bob o has just informed me that the car park is closed. Will let you know more when Iget there.

We didn't come up yesterday because the WWT Upton site had a header saying "Following major restoration work at The Moors, the car park will be closed on Thurs 29th and Fri 30th for resurfacing. The hides will be open but parking is only at The Flashes,"

Evidently they didn't communicate with the wardens.

Squeaky door at the Flashes Avocet hide

Many thanks to Keith Moore for contacting his son-in-law Rich (a chippy), who kindly came and sorted the door frame and door out for us. After 4 years we now no longer have a squeaky door.:t:

The New Bittern Channel

Today I had a closer look at the Bittern ditch and it looks great.
Off the main ditch facing the East hide are 3 deepish channels for fish breeding. Two on the right (south) side and one on the north side.

Photo's
1. looking along west track channel towards car park
2. from same point looking across to the North west reed bed.
3. looking from the NW reed bed back to where 1 and 2 were taken from. Notice mouth of side channel at bottom right - see photo 4.
4. side channel on north side
5. from east side of west channel looking SW.
In time the channels will narrow as the reeds grow down the slopes. But the channels are too deep in the centre for the reeds to colonize. So a permanent open area will exist. The west track bank will also vegetate and today the contractors planted several hawthorn saplings. Water rails can be seen all along the channels and the side of west track.

Thanks John. You answered one of the questions in the PM I sent you.

Today at the Moors Pool

I eventually got to the Moors Pool via the Education Reserve, having decided to park at the Sailing Centre when I discovered that the car park at the Moors was shut! The only notable addition to John's observations were a pair of Kingfishers that flew past me whilst I watched the Sailing Pool from the dell.

After walking along the Salwarpe I called into the Jacobs' hide, where I was joined by Bob Potter and Vern amongst others. Whilst there I saw the following:

Pochard 11 (8 drakes), Shelduck 6, Shoveler 56, GC Grebe 2, Little Grebe 2, Cormorant 31, Snipe 14 (in flight), Lapwing 250+, Water Rail, Kingfisher.

Vern and I then walked around to the West Hide, where, in addition to the above we saw 6 Gadwall (3 pairs). This was a UW year tick for me, taking my total up to 66 species (I think!).

I neglected to count the Teal but John (Upstarts) told me later that he had seen 80+ there.

Good to hear the voice of our own Biking Birder when Vern rang him earlier today. Great to hear you in such good spirits Gary. Most of us at the Warren are keeping up to date with your adventures via your Facebook and blogs. Great stuff mate!:t:
