Sicalis lebruni (Oustalet, 1891) OD here

The Eponym Dictionary of Birds claims:

Édouard A. Lebrun (1852-1904) was a french taxidermist who collected in Argentinia (1882)

The old key:

Édouard A. Lebrun (1852-1904) French taxidermist, collector in Argentina 1882 (Sicalis).

And the Bulletin du Muséum national d'histoire naturelle here

LEBRUN (Édouard-Adolphe). Ancien préparateur au Muséum. Voyageur naturaliste: Patagonie (Expédition du Volage), à Saint Calais (Sarthe) ... 22 nov . 1904

Here in 1877

Muséum - M. Lebrun (Edouard-Adolphe), employé temporaire au laboratoire de la chaire de malacologie du Muséum d'histoire naturelle, est nommé préparateur de ladite chaire, en remplacement de M. Potteau, décedé.

I did not find the record in Archive en ligne as it stops 1902 here.

And if I read here ...

Dans sa séance du 22 novembre 1904, l'Assemblée des Professeurs a décerné le titre de Correspondant du Muséum à M. Lebrun (Edouard-Adolphe), ancien Préparateur de Malacologie.

... I even doubt that he has died in 1904.

This record seems to be incorrect:

It might be worth to update The Key to Scientific Names with his middle name Adolphe. But I still doubt 1904 as year of death as he corresponded still on 22. November 1904

But now I checked Pauls link in #2 and I really ask me if Hector Lebrun , 1866-1960 isn't the person to look for? But I assume Lebrun was from MNHN here

And not to forget according here captain Fleuriaris (Georges Ernest Fleuirais)

  • Limnaea lebruni Mabille & Rochebrune, 1889 OD here
  • Lebrunaster E. Perrier, 1891 OD here
  • Pteraster lebruni Perrier, 1891 OD here

I do not see Hector Lebrun 1866-1960 associated with MNHN(but I have no final evidence).

So here's proof that Édouard-Adolphe worked at the MNHN. Attached also is his pension record that I think is significant it shows that he retired to Saint Calais. I attach the 1906 census showing a retired Edouard Lebrun living in Saint Calais in 1906.

Hector-Dieudonné Lebrun (1866-1960) never went to Patagonia (see his CV) and was doing his PhD at the time of the MNHN expedition also he was generally known as Dieudonné Lebrun.

...a retired Edouard Lebrun born in Paris in 1852 - there can be very little doubt that it was him indeed.

He got his PhD in 1890. In Nov 1882, when this bird was collected, he was just over 16 yo: I think he was more likely still attending college at this time.

With the same wife and children no less :)

In Feb 1916, his widow ("Thibaron (Irène-Louise), veuve LEBRUN"), 12th entry in the first column) was given a pension, running from 5 Nov 1915. This presumably followed his death. So I would assume 1852-1915.

Guys, maybe now somewhat superfluous, but in the very first part (Histoire du Voyage, by Louis Ferdinand Martial, 1884) of the multi-parted Work Mission scientifique du cap Horn, 1882-1883 (where the OD itself appeared, in tome/volume 6, partie/part 1), we find Monsieur Lebrun mentioned (here) as:
Naturalistes adjoints à la Mission à terre.
LEBRUN, Prèparateur au Muséum
[...]

Thus, indeed, to me (with my insufficient French) it seems like M. (Monsieur), Édouard Lebrun [i.e. Édouard Adolphe Lebrun] ought to be the guy you're looking for. He collected of the Type specimen (in November 1882), as well as several other Bird specimens, and quite a few Plants, Shells, etc., etc., during this Mission/Expedition.

Also see Bulletin du Museum d'Histoire naturelle (1900), here, where he's mentioned as:
... M. Édouard Lebrun, préparateur au Museum.
(i.e. the guy who retired in 1903, as told in Martin's latter link in #11).

I think you can drop the younger (Hector) Lebrun all together (as well as other guys with the same Surname).

Hopefully of some use/help?

Either way, take it for what it's worth (if anything at all). It's just some observations (from a Non-French view).

Björn

PS. In any case, I know nothing (absolutely nothing) about his years (Birth and Death, that is). ;)

Laurent, it looks like you assumed correctly ... ;)

Yesterday (afternoon) the Key was updated into:
lebruni
Édouard Adolphe Lebrun (1852-1915) French naturalist, taxidermist, collector in Argentina 1882 (Sicalis).

One less to ponder over (at least for me). Time for a cup of coffee. Or two.

:coffee:
